Guys, I will be posting sentence error and improving sentence questions that I have found and do not know why they are wrong. Can people please give me feedback!

Please guys help if you can

1) Many of the instruments used in early operations of the united states Army Signal (Corps were adaptations of equipment used by the Plains Indians, paricularly that of the Heliograph.)

What is wrong with it and what is the grammatical rule that the question is testing? Why is it wrong?

2) Only since the publication of her first novel (Olivia has been considering) herself a writer.

Why is this wrong and what is the rule being tested?

As I said if you can provide answers to my questions dont be afraid to post :D

For #2… I believe “has” should come before “Olivia.” So, it would read… “Only since the publication of her first novel has Olivia been considering herself a writer.” It seems to flow better that way.

For the first… I’d venture to say that it’s the placement of the remark about the Heliograph. It probably should be connected somewhere near “equipment.” It seems a bit odd where it is.

Just my guesses. :)

I agree with ^ on number 1

Thanks guys! … BUT

For the 2nd question the answer was has Olivia considered but i dont uniderstand why
1st question I have got no idea. I agree it sounds wrong but why!

101 views but no posts! C’mon guys share the knowledge

Many of the instruments used in early operations of the united states Army Signal (Corps were adaptations of equipment used by the Plains Indians, particularly that of the Heliograph.)

There are two problems with the original sentence:

“particularly” is an an adverb. Which verb or adjective does it modify? It’s placement at the end of the sentence makes that unclear. Is it the first verb “used” or the second verb “used”? Does the writer mean that Heliographs were used by the Plains Indians and that the Army modified them. Or are the Army instruments derived from Indian instruments called Heliographs?

Also the clause “particularly that of the Heliograph” suggests some attribute of the Heliograph, whereas the intent is the Heliograph itself.

What is the intent?

I like tinkering with ancient instruments, particularly Heliographs.

I like the feel of a fine instrument, particularly that of the Heliograph

Thanks I get it!
