Public--7 counselors for over 4200 students. They are for post high school only.
The students work on their schedule with their advisor. (Like a home room teacher.) They stay in the same sex groups for all four years. They have one advisor for freshman year and a second advisor is with them for 3 years.

First meeting with the post high school counselor is April/May of junior year.

At my public science magnet school, there are 550 students and 2 grades and class-choosing counselors, 1 college-only counselor, and 2 "issues" counselors.

We can go talk to them whenever we want, we don't really schedule meetings, they do if they need to talk to us about something in particular. Junior year I probably had about 4 meetings scheduled by them (about college- PSAT & National Merit stuff were other meetings). Senior year I've had about 3 meetings because I've done most of the searching and stuff on my own so I didn't feel like I needed to consult them much after the initial meetings. On the other hand, some of my friends are in the guidance offices every other day it seems like.

Public school, 2 counselors for each grade, so 8 counselors in all for school of 2000.

1: 250. 2 senior counselors who write recommendations etc.

HOWEVER i never talked to them except getting out classes i didn't like and changing my schedule. I never talked to them about my college choices (most my school kids went to instate university anyhow) and they never asked or called me up.

The only notable thing about my counselor was that she thought I was suicidal but still didn't bother to call me up for a meeting or anything. (i'm not, but that concerns me a little..)

I don't know how she wrote my recommendation either because she didn't know anything about me. Whatever, I'm in college now.

I did all the research on my own, alot which was done @ collegeconfidential. Thank God. (i didn't have anybody to help me, mostly on my own. All my friends as stated above went to instate school and my parents/brother were out of state/country)

2:1700, but they're pretty much there do handle scheduling issues and general problems. My school uses teacher advisors for the whole college process. We choose a TA to have for sophmore-senior year and they're the ones who help everyone apply to colleges etc.

At my school, there's one counselor for all of the underclassmen (320 students). Then there's three counselors for the upperclassmen (300 students). The senior class is the smallest (140), so even if it's a 1:100 ratio, it'd be 1:47 for the seniors, which isn't that bad.

We had 3 "official" counselors for 255 seniors at my high school and also a multitude of "unofficial" ones that students often went to for advice (namely teachers and coaches). And yes, this advice was often about college.
