And then complains that he/she can’t find a job?
Shouldn’t have been stupid
Not much.
My friend’s sister is like this. Majored in gender studies then complains she can’t find decent employment - must be the patriarchy!
I know someone well who majored in gender studies, went to law school and now is very happily, and gainfully, employed making well into 6 figures. She had great undergrad GPA because she was studying what se loved.
It’s not the Major per se. If the person can show that he/she can write well, communicate well and synthesize data and information that’s useful to an organization or company and is willing to contribute to my organization, then GREAT!
Also that person should be ACTIVELY making the best use of his/her summers to get experience. If I look at a resume, the Major isn’t the most important thing – to me, that just tells me what makes them tick – what they like. To me, what skills does the person bring? Do they REALLY want to be in my field? Does the resume reflect that? I’d hire a Gender Studies (or Art History, Religious studies, sociology, insert yours here) major if those other, more important factors exist. No hesitation whatsoever.
Conversely, the person whose Major is square in my industry’s norm – but yet does not possess the items I mentioned above – will be bypassed.
If I could go back in time, I’d be an unabashedly proud History Major – b/c that’s what makes me tick.
To the OP: what’s YOUR opinion of ppl who choose this major? Are you trying to make a point?
I think they’re interested in gender studies and the job market sucks right now.
Does it make you feel good, putting other people down?
Why did you single out gender studies as opposed to, say, English? Most majors aren’t very lucrative.
This thread is just bad. Many majors don’t have good job prospects in their respective fields. It has nothing to do with the major and all to do with who has the most impressive skills.

I’m closing this thread because:
