What Kind of Classes Should I Take to Boost My MBA Admission Chances?

Hi cc'ers,

I have a question about taking classes to help with MBA admission chances. I've been out of college for roughly a year, graduated as an engineering major from BU with quite average undergrad GPA (slightly below 3.0). After graduation I've worked for a large computer software company as an intergration Consultant/Solution Architect.

Now, I recently saw that my company pays employee for a couple of classes every year. So I thought it would be helpful to try to take some classes locally (harvard, mit, bu, bc, etc). I've heard the rumor that good grades in classes after graduate could possibly help in MBA admission. So I am wondering what're you guys' take on taking classes after graduation?

I talked to BU's MBA admission office last week, and they told me they do not offer graduate-level business classes to anyone who hasn't been admitted to the full/part time MBA program. They also told me I can try to take graduate level business classes at Metropolitan college, which is BU's school for professionals; however, they will not accept any credits trasferred from Metropolitan. So should I just start taking undergrad business classes to begin with?

I'm pretty clueless as to what classes to start with, and whether it will even help with my MBA admission. Thanks for your help!

If you are targeting BU a better question than “what upper division classes can I take to better my chances at getting into the MBA program” would be “what can I do to better my chances at getting into the MBA program”… a broader question might yield better advice.

IMO, not knowing BU, I would guess that they might suggest GMAT prep courses. My other thought would be to see if there are courses that might lead to a second degree, that in taking these and bettering your overall gpa.

Some schools have a formula that they apply when assessing the numbers part of your application. Finding out what this formula is, if they have it, might help you target a specific GMAT score that will help calm your concerns regarding your gpa.

Note, your numbers (gpa and gmat) are only part of the admissions process. I wouldn’t focus on the numbers if doing so won’t help. I would, however, focus on the demonstration of the soft and business skills they like to see.

Thank you for your advice, Japher!

The reason I chose this discussion topic was because my company offered to pay for a couple of classes a year. So I thought rather than wasting the money, why not take some classes that could possibly result in bettering my chances of admission to GMAT.

I’m not only targeting BU - IMO it would only be worthwhile for me to quit my job and attend a full-time MBA program if I ever get admitted to, say, a top 15 MBA program. I know my chances are probably against me since these schools receive tons of applications, that’s why I want to get every advantage as possible.

I will definitely explore my options to take some GMAT prep courses as well as the secondary degress that you mentioned. Althought it seems like a second degress might take a few years to accomplish if I were to take less than 4 classes per year.

Again, I’m a complete newbie at this so thank you for your explanations!
