what kind of school is rutgers?

i know it's big
but what else?
how's the programs there?
anything special?
can anyone tell me?

Medieval/Renaissance studies is supposedly a fine program.

Psychology is REALLY strong there. So are the sciences.

Rutgers is a regular state school, but that's just me because I live here. All I can tell you is that half of NJ students go there, it's VERY annoying.

Check out Princeton Review's site and look at the remarks about Rutgers. They rank Rutgers as #6 (out of 20) for "professors get low marks," #14 (20) for "teachers make themselves scarce," and #14 (20)for "Teaching Assistants Teach Too Many Upper-Level Courses."

I'd vote NO WAY - for my son... BUT, many students obviously thrive regardless of situations such as mentioned above.

Rutgers is a major research University with all the upside and downside that implies. It is a member of the Association of American Universities. It has numerous high quality programs and is world class in philosophy and women's studies. It has a good location, a bus or train-ride from NYC. RU benefits from that in terms of the cultural resources available, and faculty members who are attracted to being, and many cases actually living, in NYC.

It has Division I sports, and if you care about basketball the expansion of the Big East in that sport should make for some exciting games. It's women's team should be in the top ten this year. It has an energetic new President who was is Rutgers born and just came to the University after serving as the President of the University of Washington. He has offered up a plan to combine all the New Brunswick colleges and to physically rebuild the University. New buildings have already gone up in downtown New Brunswick and more green space is expected.

The further away you get from New Jersrey the better reputation Rutgers has.

is rutgers really that good or is it a walk in type university? I am considering going there for their 7 year medical program.

I think it is really very good - it does have a wonderful reputation - BUT, I think you have to be a certain kind of student to reap the benefits it has to offer. Personally, I don't think it would be a good choice for my son... I believe he would fare best in a small intimate environment.

Only YOU can figure out what would be best for you. :-)

If you are seriously considering Rutgers, be aware of the changes they are implimenting... they are considering scrapping the different campuses and combining them for one huge "college of arts and sciences" and an engineering school.

And tsdad is right... the reputation in-state is sort of eh, but it is more well-regarded out of state.

tsdad, you just answered a question I posted literally SECONDS ago on another thread! Thank you.
You can major in philosophy at Rutgers? And if anyone who knows anything about it is reading this, would you mind telling me a bit about the major and what degree is best for a successful career?

Please PM if possible, I don't want to be rude and hog the thread. Thanks! :)
