What kind of students take Math 53/54?

trying to figure out the level of competition in these 2 classes because i plan to take them next year.

probably a lot of engineering and physics geniuses in there huh? :(

They should be easier than 1B

why is that?

There’s no point in having 4 lower division weeder classes now is there? One of my friends, who didn’t do too hot in 1a or 1b, had a cheat sheet for 54 which was basically, “This is a square bracket. Numbers go inside and those are called “matrices”” or something to that effect.

so he did good in 53/54 compared to 1a/1b? lol sorry, i dont really get what you were trying to say with that cheat sheet anecdote.

i would think 53/54 are harder than 1a/1b because all the people who realize they can’t handle math when they took 1a/1b drop out, and the field also becomes more narrow in that engineering, math, and physics guy make up the majority of the students.

am i right?

math 53/54 are not easy. math 53 deals with multivariable calculus. On the final, you will be asked to prove Stoke’s theorem. Math 54 is a bit more theoretical. Proofs are a must.

The grades are higher in those classes not because the profs go easy but because the dumb students got weeded out in math 1a/1b and the surviving smart students go on to take math 53/54.
