what kinds of HEALTHY foods for my dorm refrigerator?? meals,snacks,etc...

so i'm trying to think ofw hat kind of easy-microwaveable meals i can make, but what should i buy? that are healthy especially?

and snacks... ?

Things like Lean Cuisine and South Beach frozen meals are healthy and easy, but kind of expensive. Lots of soups are also pretty healthy, and less expensive. For snacks, nuts and fresh fruit are great, and my daughter also loves cherry tomatoes!

i can help you with this- im a major health nut, vegetarian, and lived in a dorm for 4 years:
*definitely stock up on ramen noodles/soup cups- CHEAP, EASY, most are very low-cal.
carrots, other veggies, hummus for protein
cereal
oatmeal
lite popcorn
yogurt
string cheese
diet soda
*protein bars
a lot of people live on easy-mac, but i personally wouldnt touch the stuff

if youre worried about gaining the freshman 15, i recommend not letting yourself eat after a certain time of day- people do most of their munching while they're studying at night, especially on junk. if you are pulling an all nighter, have a low calorie snack/mini-meal around 11pm to give you fuel for the night

there are also "cookbooks" for college students- giving you cheap and easy recipies to make in your dorm room, though not necessarily healthy

(also, get a hotpot)

Just in case you decide to switch to a low carb lifestyle like me, I'd recommend beef jerky, lots of lettuce, lots of cheese, ranch dressing, diet sodas, breyers carb smart ice cream (so good!), atkins advantage breakfast bars (also really good), and lots of cold cut meats (turkey, roast beef, chicken breast, and some ham - but ham often has a lot of sugar so be careful with that)

I always find that carrots work well. They're certainly a snackable food and they're good for helping eyes that have detiorated due to burning the midnight oil before a biology exam. Plus, they're not messy if you don't go overboard with the ranch dressing.

Celery and apples are good because it actually more calories to eat them than you get from the food itself. And, hahaZ, they're each good with peanut butter.

Ramen noodles may be cheap, but they are NOT healthy. Nor are Cup Noodles. Here's some nutrition info from the box of Nissan Cup Noodles, Salsa Picante Chicken Flavor:

Serving Size: 1 container

Calories: 290 (from fat: 120)
Total Fat: 13g (Saturated: 7g)
Sodium: 1250mg (52% DRV)
Carbohydrates: 37g (2g from dietary fiber, 2g from sugars)
Protein: 6g

So they're a good source of protein, a too-good source of sodium, a terrible source of all vitamins save iron (40%), and not terribly low-cal.

They're safe to eat, of course, and they are a good cheap alternative, but consider not using the powder flavoring (plain noodles) flavored with some spray butter (I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray, that is; fat free, though it does have some calories and salt). Also make sure to eat them sparingly!

There's a company that makes teriyaki bowls (they're sold in 4-packs) that are VERY VERY tasty and also very good for you. They have rice, chicken, stir-fry vegetables and teriyaki sauce. They're microwavable, don't take up too much room in the dorm-room freezer, and cost less than $2 a bowl (remember that each bowl is a meal).

Good luck!

dont things like lean cuisine have a lot of salt in them???????

Not as much as ramen...
doesn't ramen have MSG?

Get milk for your fridge so you can eat cereal for breakfast.

I also LOVE the drinkable smoothies from Dannon. Only 80 calories each, uses Splenda and has vitamins/iron.

Oatmeal (mentioned by Huskem55 above) is a great idea. But get the real thing! - not the instant, flavored, individual packet stuff.

Lowfat, easy to store and soooooo refreshing...or was that regressing???

lol, what about carbs though, hazmat.

and i skip the oatmeal that morning. Just straight up beer....no cream, no butter, no brown sugar. Really long shelf life and sooooooo smooth. Oh....and i don't steal my roommates candy bars the morning I have a beer. Oops

yogurt. dannon's lowfat yogurt is so good. Get it. You won't regret it.

one word= GRANOLA! granola bars, chewy bars, are relatively healthy and you dont even need to refridgerate them. they are a great on-the-go snack, and are just delicious =)

isnt splenda not good for u because it contains aspertame (which causes blindess)?????????

Viagra is what causes blindness. Well that and one other form of satisfaction.

splenda is supposedly the "healthiest" of the fake sweetners. but really the only way you'd get any adverse effects from any of them is by eating hundreds of pounds of the stuff per day

Wow.....hundreds of pounds. Sounds soooo yummy. It is true that I don't think Splenda tastes as yuk as the other envelopes of fake stuff.

Aspartame, btw, is made by combining two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine... both of which are in virtually every protein in your body.

My two cents: find a Trader Joe's in your area. They have all kinds of amazing healthy stuff, but my favorite are the low-fat meatless corndogs. 150 calories, and they taste just like regular corndogs.

Also, if you're looking for snacks, Skinny Cow brand ice cream stuff is delicious and low-cal (140 calorie ice cream sandwiches! hooray!).

Yup you can pick up your Two Buck Chuck and all the healthy snax you can hold in a basket. I cannot speak to the "corn dog/hot dog" things however.
