I have about $700-800 to spend on a laptop and the price of a flashdrive doesn't concern me (but links to sites where I can cheap flash drives are welcome :) ).

*As perspective EE major, what laptop would suffice for the future tasks that an EE major has to complete?
*Should I buy a 64gb flashdrive or settle for something smaller?

Thanks in advance!

Holy cow! 64 GB? Why on earth would you need a 64 GB flash drive? At any rate, the best place to go for pretty much all things computers (except cables) is Newegg.

I have a similar question. When (and if) I get into GaTech, I will of course be taking some MATLAB and engineering design courses. What would be a suitable laptop to handle those tasks as well as others that may arise within the ME school?

For most matlab applications in a class, just about any laptop will do. The only time I have run into problems on weaker computers was in my signals processing class during undergrad and during my potential flow class in grad school when I was running some pretty beefy panel method codes. Also in my graduate viscous flow class there was a stability code I wrote but that was causing problems in PC’s as well.

Any laptop you get will work fine. MATLAB is available for pretty much every platform you would be interested in (Windows, Mac, Linux). In general, don’t worry about specific platform/hardware. If you really need performance beyond what your laptop can handle, then it probably isn’t an issue of your laptop being marginally slower than some other laptop. Most schools have computing facilities available for student use; I assume UCI is no exception.

Thanks guys, I believe I could do with the laptop I currently have then. I’ll be checking Newegg for a USB flashdrive. :)
