Hey guys! I am planning to get a new laptop for college to replace my old but still working Inspiron E1505. I plan to major in civil engineering and I have no idea what laptop is ideal for it. I only have around $1000... so yeah. My parents might pay a little more for a Mac but eh... that's already too much. PLEASE HELP FIND ME MY LAPTOP FOR THE NEXT 4-5 YEARS! Thanks :]

I am going into engineering as well. Look into your school’s requirements. I plan on getting the HP Envy 14 when it comes out June 27. It has a base price of $999.

^ That’s only for my school in general though. I know that engineering majors need something powerful but eh… since I don’t know much about laptops I’m like O.O

I wanted a Mac but that’s too expensive… the Envy 14 isn’t that bad, but I don’t really like HP though.

That’s too bad that you don’t like HP. I know people are probably tired of hearing me say this, but I really recommend the HP dm4. You can get a very nicely-equipped one for around $750 (if you wait for a decent coupon).

Otherwise, Lenovo Thinkpad T-series is very good.

LOL! well any recommendations are good to me! :] I’ll still think about it.

Speaking of a decent coupon, Bing currently has a 25% cash back coupon for HP! http://www.bing.com/cashback/ It’s in the featured cashbacks.

@Beta_Fist, THAT’S AWESOME! THANKS! :]

bump anyone?

I’m an engineering major and I chose to get a Macbook Pro 13 inch. They give you a free iPod touch and printer to go along with it, so if price is really an issue you can sell those items off.

@briangt, that’s what i’m planning to do right now. is the macbook pro good?

Hello peoples from the past. You’ve probably bought your laptop by now, but the Envy 14 was a good idea. Mac is great, but a little expensive.

What did you get?

hey! i didn’t get my laptop yet. haha. probably getting an asus though.

my son just got his hpEnvy 14 and he is an engineering major. So far he is liking it a lot! he is bringing his desktop too which is a Mac. He likes both pc and Mac, but chose the hpEnvy because it seemed to be better for engineering. It cost just over $1000 with his student discount and the specs he chose.

Get one of those asus models (since they have most bang for the buck) or save for a ThinkPad W701ds

I had an HP dv6t Select Edition, but my particular unit had a few build quality issues, but the performance was great aside from high temperatures.

I am now looking at an Envy 14 as well, and so far, I like everything about it except for the flowery etching. My alternative is a Sony Z-series, but the price of that is MB Pro 15 territory.

School doesn’t start for me until Sept. 29th, so I still have two months to wait for a Sony Z-series promotion.

Just a sidenote, I downloaded a trial version of AutoCad (I’m a civil engineering major) and ran it on my Core 2 Duo 2.4 gHz desktop with 2GB of RAM. It can’t handle it.

So for those of you who plan on running engineering programs on your notebooks, I would not recommend purchasing the Apple MacBook Pro 13 or the Envy 13 series, since those only come with Core 2 Duo processors.

I have to disagree with you there. It sounds like you were trying to run it on the e6600 Core 2 Duo. The 65nm Core 2s do struggle a bit with CPU-intensive tasks, but the 45nm Core 2 Duos should be able to run that program with no issues (e8400-e8600)

Why not get an HP Envy 14? I got that and I absolutely love it.
