I need to buy a laptop for college, but I am unsure of what one to get. I would like to buy a Mac, but I don't know if that will be good for my major in physics. Also does anyone know if I should buy a laptop with a disk drive?

Physics majors don’t need specific laptops, so anything would be fine. You don’t need a laptop with a disk drive but it would be useful for an occasional movie.

Okay cool. I don’t think I will need the disk drive for movies because I have Netflix.

Does anyone know about what computer you need for engineering?

Generally, the type of computer you have doesn’t really matter for engineering. Outside of college though, most engineering is done through windows OS or any non-mac operating system, or at least this is what was said to me after long conversations with the computer store staff at the UCSB bookstore; this might convince you to get something other than a Mac. This excludes computer science majors though.

It’s important to get Matlab on your computer since engineering majors will most likely need it for Engineering 3, an introductory programming class required for MechE, ChemE, and EE majors.
