Does choice of major matter in terms of admissions? I am going to select biochemistry and finance or international relations for my second choice.

Probably not too much unless you choose a major that you’re wildly unprepared for (i.e. chemistry major having only taken one science course in HS) without some sort of explanation.

English, though I quickly soured on it once I started looking at the requirements of the major and the classes offered. As a freshman, I explored Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology, and now I’m an Anthro major.

Sustainable Development

Physics 10char

Financial engineering with hopefully a minor in Political Science/History

@precisely: Also applied as an English major. Planning on doing a concentration on business in addition.

Poli Sci/ History

Pretty much doing the same as @rchhay, but applied Undecided/English/Sociology. Wrote my optional essay about English.

English. Although I wrote about being interested in pursuing a double-major in Spanish in the essays.

English. I had wanted to list Business too but it’s not a major at Columbia.

History, woohooo!

“Applied math. I saw the chart of graduates’ final majors in 2010, and only 2 graduates got a degree in applied math.”

They actually have had a lot of problems with the Applied Mathematics Department. The past few years the numbers have been dwindling down to dangerously low amounts. But last year, I believe, the number spiked up to twenty people joining the program and they aren’t having as many issues anymore. Just something to put in.

Guys, just know that what major you’re applying as will not make or break the decision by any means. Columbia is more than aware your major is most likely going to change.
