Please let me know if I should move this to a different area of the forum
I am thinking about majoring in an area of biology, but I have certain interests in biology and do not know what major they would correlate with such that I would be able to study those topics:
These are the topics:
Protein folding and structure
Beginnings of life on Earth and studying the theories that attempt to explain it
Use of small scale technology to replicate structure and function of cells and/or biomolecules
Cellular manipulation
Extraterrestrial life and how it would work
Mathematical modeling of genetics
I know these categories may be scattered, but if any of you guys can pick and choose some (hopefully most) of these topics and come up with a major that covers these things that would be great!
This is a wide enough range that you’re probably best served by general biology, and picking courses from the major selectives that cover those sorts of things.
Depending on the school, I suppose, molecular biology may be more heavily weighted toward this sort of stuff—but only maybe. Take a good look at curricula, recognizing that life sciences curricula change frequently.
Most colleges only offer a general major in biology. Some schools have tracks or concentrations but most just let you take on a general biology concentration or no concentration at all. There’s a good stickied thread on this, too, explaining why undergrad majors should probably skip the specialized biology majors to begin with.
