What major for an M.Arch degree?

I know this board is mainly for undergraduate degrees, but after browsing through the topics I've seen a few questions about M.Arch programs and I thought it would still be alright to ask my question(s) here.

I am a junior who has decided that they want to go into architecture. (I am especially interested in historic preservation.) No worries, I didn't just think this up, it's something I've been considering since high school and now that I've given up on science I'm ready for it to stop gnawing at the back of my mind. I know that for an M.Arch I degree you don't have to have a bachelors in architecture, but that it does help to have a strong foundation in art. Since I know that I will probably be here a while longer than intended, I decided that I could just tack on an art minor to whatever it is I decide on. Now, I have done semi-extensive research on this, but none of the M.Arch programs really give much information on what they want regarding an applicant's bachelor degree. I talked to an advisor yesterday and she basically told me the only thing I could do is major in engineering and minor in art. I'm very sorry, but I do not want to major in engineering. Not only would I be here MUCH longer, but somehow I feel like that is not the only way and that knowing that would cause me to put forth less effort into engineering (I don't know why, I just assume that will happen). What I do know is that I don't really want to finish my current major. I have all of my required courses, so theoretically I could do much of another degree in the next two years. (Although I'm sure it doesn't work that way.)

So, architects and architecture majors of CC, what would you recommend? Do I really need to major in engineering? Should I pick some other major or do my university's individualized major program (which has always seemed shady to me, although I'm sure that it probably isn't)? Or, should I just give up on architecture and go teach kindergarten? (Not really an option.)

Also, when applying to M.Arch programs, do they prefer your portfolio to be more technical or not? Do they tend to put even weight on GPA/GRE/portfolio or does it just depend on the school?

Thank you very much for any input you might have, and I'm sorry if this is jumbled and confusing.
