I’m currently a high schooler but I like to think about the future. I want to be an internal medicine physician when I’m older, so I’m trying to figure out what to major in. I was thinking public health bc internal medicine physicians focus a lot on diagnosis and prevention of a disease, and public health is kind of like that but more broad (a perspective of the public, not an individual). I may be wrong however, because that is what public health is to my understanding, but again I may be wrong haha. But also I was thinking of majoring in biology with a focus on molecular biology because I’m pretty interested in that as well, and I know for sure a biology major would be good for med school, but to be an interal medicine physician I’m not sure what major would be the best
Thanks!
“I know for sure a biology major would be good for med school”
Any major will do. The best major for you for med school is the one that you’re interested in because if you like material you’ll be more likely to do well GPA wise which is something med schools care a great deal about initially. Med schools will tell you to pick a major that interests you, not what interests them. Most pick bio, partly out of interest, but also because it kills two birds with one stone (ie satisfies major and premed reqs at same time) whereas if you’re say a Humanities major, you’re going have to fit premed reqs into schedule. No major will prepare you for med school, MCAT or for any med specialty, including Internal Medicine. Performance (GPA) in premed courses (eg bio, chem, physics) gives adcoms a way to see (and compare) if applicants can handle moderately difficult science courses. These courses are NOT entitled bio or chem or physics for med school or for MCAT prep, they’re simply titled bio, chem, physics etc. College profs don’t gear these courses towards premeds. They are just garden variety courses taught at most colleges. Make sure you enjoy rest of time in high school. Good luck
