Hello there everyone. I was wondering if there are any pre med students or med students out there who would like to shed some light on this topic for me. I am a rising senior and I must decide a major soon. I have been leaning towards Biology with pre med but I was wondering if there’s another major that would be better for the pre med track. I like all sciences so there’s no worry about not like the major. I’m just worried that biology would be too broad for medical schools and if I just go into a more specific branch. Thanks for the help
Pick a major you can live with, if med school doesn’t happen.
FYI, a professional career in biology requires a Masters or PhD.
quoting in part from post #8 from above may give you an idea which majors not to chose
“As long as the OP doesnt major in party and minor in frat, they major in whatever”
The point is although not of zero importance, any major will do the trick. Most kids pick some flavor of bio because it tends to satisfy most premed reqs at same time that it satisfies major reqs. You can be an art history, Spanish lit, etc. Just do well GPA wise in all your courses. If anything pick a major with a Plan B in mind as most premeds will never see the inside of a med school. Good luck
Pick a major that you could see yourself doing if med school doesn’t work out. After that, make sure you understand what the prerequisites for medical school are and work them into your major coursework. The prerequisites are generally:
1 year of gen chem
1 year of bio
1 year of physics
1 year of organic chemistry
1 semester of stats
perhaps some higher level biology classes such as biochemistry
1 year of writing intensive courses
A semester in psychology and a semester in sociology are now also recommended for the new MCAT.
There is no such thing as the best pre-med major. What works the best for one student may be the worst choice for another. Also, department strength at specific college may play a certain role. At some school(s), most pre-meds maybe a Zoology major simply because of known strength of this department which by no way translates into another college.
