What major would you choose?

I have a slight idea of what major I will eventually go with. Just thought I'd hear something from you guys though.
One aspect of that idea is that I want to do something that I enjoy. Yes, I'm sick of hearing it though.... I'm sick of hearing about everything being about "jobs....or...how much you make."

I got in this conversation with this kid about Accounting. He told me that there's no reason not to major in Accounting because CPAs are among the top 10 in highest salaries, whatever... that nonsense. I enjoy Accounting, but I want to keep my options open for Business Law and Management, two things that I'm going to get a taste for real soon.

Anyways, I'm a Business major. I consider myself undeclared within Business. Not that this is bad. I am currently finishing up my core requirements at my college of my University as well as GEs and my minor's requirements when I can. I do need to make a decision of which field I will find a viable subject to study perhaps by this Fall. For now, I am tied between:

Accounting
Management
Business Law
Systems/ Operations Management

Which major would you consider if this was your personal path?

Do you want to do business when you graduate? Or do you just want a college degree? If the latter, then I’d probably do Systems Management.

If you want to do business, I’d probably do accounting. You learn a lot about managing money and a lot about finance in most accounting programs. I’m not sure why having a management degree would make you more apt to be a manager than someone without a management degree. You could minor in it if you really wanted to. Or just develop your leadership skills and a management position will come with time. If you like computers though, but not enough to do something like computer engineering or computer science, then Info Systems might be good. I’m not too familiar with that sort of major, but I think you learn a fair bit about business in addition to becoming a solid IT guy. IT pays pretty well.

Business law sounds like pre-law which isn’t anything special. You learn actual law in law school; so you might as well just take a major that interests you, that you can get a good GPA in (either with or without hard work), and do well on your LSAT.

Accounting (but I am biased as a finance/accounting double major).

Could you double major? Some of these may have classes that overlap.

Accounting. You said you enjoy it, so go for it. You’re one of the few people who do, for the majority of the population, accounting is a nightmare. I don’t know where you attend school, but regardless, it matters little for accounting as long as you can get your CPA.

If you like technology, you could try systems/ops management (I’m assuming this is similar to MIS), but again this would depend on the school you are attending. If you attend a school ranked in the top 5 in this category, it could possibly be a good choice. But if you don’t, I would suggest you stick with accounting, as recruiters usually try to hire CS/EECE first in this category.

Don’t do management. Pick up some real skills.
