What makes Hotchkiss so special ?

We seem to have a million and one threads like this about Exeter (with the same answers - ie Harkness) so I thought I'd make a thread like this for some other schools just for a bit of fun.

So people what makes Hotchkiss so special ??

Ha, I know Hotchkiss has custom Hotchkiss colored M&Ms coutersy of Mr. Mars. But what else is there to the school other than great chocolate that makes it so "special" ?

Have you been to the school? It's amazing. The teachers are really nice, and serious about there work, personally I like Hotchkiss better than A/E.

yeah, I go to Hotchkiss ... I love Hotchkiss as well this thread was actually satire to another thread of the same name that was regarding Exeter.

BUT that being said I love Hotchkiss as well, and like you i prefer it to A/E.

For instance I think that the fact that Hotchkiss is one of only three schools in the world to have a DNA sequencer is pretty cool (Exeter and some independent school somewhere in the NE - not Boarding are the other two).

Also I think that for my career path I think it is the best school: (i have added an excerpt from another member commenting on this below)

Thirdly I love the sense of community at Hotchkiss. Everyone here knows everyone else, and everyone is friendly to everyone else. There are no cliques or such things. Its like my second family.

Also Hotchkiss has the best debate team in America (by far) and is in the top 5 worldwide. Since debate is huge for me that is a huge pull factor.

And obviously the academics are awesome.

And the sports are second to none (in terms of prep schools) This year they won four new england titles in Football, Volleyball, Field hockey, and Soccer, no other school has ever won four new England championships in a single season ever.

Also I love the guest speakers that visit the place every once in a while, This semester the President of Mongolia came, as did the Ambassador to the US from Mali, as did Mr.Mars (he was discussing the Antarctica trip - more on that later), and a british Knight who is one of the world's foremost experts on education- who I had lunch with. So in that sense I think the school in wonderful.

And lastly Hotchkiss students have extremely unusual options available to them, for instance for Mr. Mars (An alum of Mars Bars fame) is taking 100 students and 16 faculty on an expenses paid trip to ANTARTICA - and he has done this before ! ) So

I would have to disagree. First of all though you have a point that having a single alumni going to a particular school who excels in one area by no means means that that school is good at that area.

HOWEVER when there is a long illustrious list of successful people in a particular are from a single school then that does suggest that that school is good a feeding people into that particular area much the same way as ivie admit rates are used to judge whether a school is good a feeding into ivy institutions. It's the exact same concept. So the Alumni lists DO say a lot about a school. Furthermore particularly in business it's not just learning the skills of business that these schools teach that is important, its the connections that these schools afford to you at a young age that can help later in your career.

For instance Tom Werner (current owner of the Boston Red Sox) went to Hotchkiss as a scholarship boy but due to the support he received from fellow hotchkiss alumni he is now a near billionaire if not a billionaire. Henry Luce the founder of time, Fortune, and sports illustrated magazine could not have been as successful as he was without his fellow partner Hat Hotchkiss Briton hadden and their publisher Linnen who also happens to be a Hotchkiss Alumnus.

And then there are the Bushes (the ones that attended Hotchkiss not Andover), they helped Fay Vincent another Hotchkiss alumnus raise capital and now Vincent is ceo of columbia pictures and a billionaire. And then there are two of the biggest financial institutions out there Morgan Stanley and Goldmann Sachs, members of the weinberg family serve on the hotchkiss board of trustees and are alumni, the former president of goldmann sachs Jphn thornton is chairman of the board at hotchkiss and his son is currently at Hotchkiss, and the founder of Morgan Stanley harold Stanley is also a hotchkiss alumnus as well as the former president of Bloomberg LP Peter grauer.

In the field of media the founders of one of the biggest advertising companies clear channel the Mays family members are Hotchkiss graduates (texas A&M named their business school after them), The former president of NBC Don Durgin is an Alumnus, Members of the Ford, Chrysler , Dodge, Pillsbury (of Pillsbury dough boy)and thompson families (founder of 7-11) are all Hotchkiss alumni, as well as the Mars brothers of M&M fame. And lovelace who some say is the creator of mutual funds was a hotchkiss alumnus. and many many more. I have heard from various informal sources that hotchkiss has produced the most billionaires out of any school on earth and i do not doubt it. Business wise at least I would certainly agree with fun if fun Hotchkiss is the best.

When your in a job interview at a large Fortune company (fortune was created by a hotchkiss grad) and the guy sitting on the other side of the table may very well be a Hotchkiss grad too. So a Hotchkiss ring goes a LONG way in the business world.

Ask bearcats if you have any question I know nothing about hotchkiss other than the extensive research i did (and what my friends in the corporate world have told me) about hotchkiss. My kid is very interrested in business see hence the name businesskid.

Hotchkiss is so special because it is only a few hours drive to Exeter. And Exeter is really, really special.

I love Hotchkiss and definitely applying.

My only concern is, alot of people have been telling me that the teachers tend to pressure students alot with work, significantly more than other schools. Could someone clarify whether this is true or false?

Coldwind: That type of self-conceited, arrogant, and frankly unfounded remark, totally turns me off Exeter, particularly if it's just full of pretentious people like you.

Hotchkiss, Andover, Milton, Deerfield, St.Pauls, AND Exeter are ALL really, really special schools. Exeter is NOT better than Hotchkiss and neither is Hotchkiss better than Exeter they are all equal. Exeter is just more well known by random people in the street but on Wall Street Hotchkiss' name goes way further - so it depends what you want really.. It comes down to your preferences really and what each school's niche is.

For instance if you were most interested in: Debate, Sports, Physics, Business and a number of other things then you would probably choose Hotchkiss over Exeter.

If however you were most interested in Math or crew then you would probably choose Exeter over Hotchkiss.

That is not to say that one school is better than the other all round because that would just be stupid. Its like saying Harvard college (Go Crimson !) is better than Princeton College - see how ridiculous that is ? It comes down to preference.

I think it was just a joke.

Apparently, Hothchkiss also provides a thin skin...

hahahahaha.

I think this is one of the things that turns me on to Exeter/Andover. I want a place where everyone thinks there the best and is fairly competitive, this is the environment I would strive on because I would be pushed.

For this same reason I believe is the reason prezomar does NOT like exeter.

Haha. Yeah, no kidding. Apparently Hotchkiss also provides you with an intolerance with those who do not share your point of view - bigotry.

Okay, that's harsh. But really prezomar, try not to react in those moments. If that comment was in fact truthful and not kidding, than just brush it off - clearly Coldwind is not worth your time.

But honestly, my experience at Exeter was nerdy, studious, and friendly. My experience at Andover, was EXTREMELY friendly, preppy, party-school oriented, and athletic.

Hotchkiss, I've heard, is slightly more NYC chic-ish. And slightly elitist. Is this true?

For instance if you were most interested in:...Sports...then you would probably choose Hotchkiss over Exeter.

If however you were most interested in...crew then you would probably choose Exeter over Hotchkiss.

Wait...I thought crew was a sport. :-S
