What makes Oberlin stand out?

I'm trying to choose between Oberlin and a couple other schools (Kenyon and Conn College). I'm definitely leaning towards Oberlin and think it sounds like such a cool cool place, but I'm also am trying to get over my squirmy indecisiveness.

What do you think makes Oberlin different? What can be my reason for choosing it besides thinking it sounds awesome?

I suggest you join the Oberlin 2018 page on Facebook and ask there.

There’s also lots of useful information about Oberlin’s distinctiveness here: http://blogs.oberlin.edu/

In my opinion, the facebook pages are generally horrible (for reference check out the Accepted! 2017 tumblr or the accepted 2018 site). However, the Oberlin blog link is a great resource!

Although I’ve only been here one year, this is just a random list of a few things that I think make Oberlin unique: preferred gender pronouns, people not wearing shoes, compost bins in the cafeteria, incredibly friendly (and brilliant, of course) professors and staff, the student honor code, the E-system for bathrooms, the conservatory, very easy to fulfil gen-eds so you’re never stuck taking a course you aren’t interested in, co-ops, the fact that they don’t sell disposable water bottles on campus, Winter Term, and of course there is just always the unique oberlin fashion sense!

Good luck deciding!

As the parent of an Oberlin senior, I can say there couldn’t have been a better choice for my daughter. We visited a lot of colleges before she saw Oberlin – and she decided to apply to it sight unseen. We visited on Martin Luther King’s Birthday weekend, during winter term, and she walked out saying that’s absolutely where she wanted to go. (AND she got in!) Despite not being able to see in a lot of the buildings or what a dorm room looked like and hardly any students on campus, she fell in love with everything the tour guide told her about the place. She wasn’t a “Con” major – but had a strong interest in all things music. She loved staying there for winter term and takes an “ExCo” each semester exploring new quirky things – weaving on a loom, Taiko drumming, Tai Chi, Hooping (as in, hula hoops), to name a few. She is a German Studies major and spent her junior spring semester abroad in Munich – and loved every minute of it. She’s very sad about graduating next month but knows that she got a quality education. I get a sense of a lot of flexibility in scheduling so that you take classes you truly will enjoy with top notch professors. Good luck with your decision – my son just made his decision for school this week, so I know it’s a tough and stressful time for all! He’s thrilled with his choice, so I hope you will be with yours also.
