I've been looking at videos and posts by people who took the class, and a lot of them warned me not to take it and that I was insane if I did. I was just wondering what would prompt students to say things like that, and what are probably the hardest concepts that are in Accounting. Any commentary or advice would help me atm, thank you.

btw I'm looking to sell my soul to being a public accountant somewhere in the future

Unlike many classes, you cannot let yourself get behind and try to catch up later. The only math required is arithmetic and perhaps the simplest of algebra. Some people can’t deal with numbers.

Accounting introduces concepts like debits = credits (double entry bookkeeping) , assets = liabilities + owners’ equity, and T- accounts. It is a new way of thinking. If you don’t get the basics, then you are going to have a difficult time. It takes practice to get these notions ingrained. You have to do a lot of problems. It can get boring, especially for people who didn’t plan on being an accounting major. Also, I think people come into accounting with a closed mind. I can’t tell you how many times someone (and I taught accounting for a few years) has said to me it is math and they don’t like math. It is not math. For the most part, all the math you need is arithmetic. But when someone has a negative attitude, it can be tough to change their outlook.

From my own viewpoint (and I am a CPA), I always found the subject accounting easy. I always like problem solving whether it was math, crossword puzzles, logic problems, whatever. So I do think there is a certain mindset that plays into being a successful accounting student. But don’t let the negative experience of others color the way you see things. And you don’t have to sell your soul to be a CPA…you just may have to put up with PIA clients who keep lousy records.

I’m taking Financial Accounting 1. It was my first and will be my last accounting class. It’s very tedious and very methodical. You have to remember a lot crap that isn’t very interesting. I have an A and will likely end with a B, by the way.

I’m in an accounting class right now at my high school… its one that you can get college credit for at some area ones so its not like it is a blow off or anything. I think it is very easy and I like it a lot. Geo1 113 summed it up pretty well. I like the class so much because it is like a puzzle and i have decided to major in accounting.

I took an intro financial accounting last quarter. It is what made me decide business wasn’t the right major for me. I love problem solving, but I like to do it mathematically. The only math that is required in accounting is addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Accounting for me was pure memorization, and I found the topic very boring. The class wasn’t that hard (it was an introductory class), but I absolutely hated opening up my accounting textbook with a passion.

Interesting take, Wassupman99. I never looked at accounting as memorization. Certainly there are aspects of memorization (which is true of any discipline), but accounting to me is more of a process. And in math, there is memorization too. For example, you can prove the derivative of sin(x) mathematically, but for practical purposes, you better have it memorized that the answer is cos(x). And to take it a step back, you do have to know, by memory, the definition of sin is opposite over hypotenuse.
