Is it one of those things where (such as engineering) you can put ALOT of time into a class, but still end up with nothing but a decent or even poor grade because of how damn hard it is?

I dont think so, simply cuz there r bunch of people get high marks

any accounting majors able to chime in here?

From what I've heard, accounting isn't supposed to be hard...

so do I...

Accounting is a lot of dilligent problem solving work... some students approach it with the attitude of, "well, you have to know all there is to know about accounting to be able to understand it." The problem with that attitude is accounting is awfully broad, and very complicated in a lot of areas. The way you succeed in accounting is to practice, practice, practice and don't put a lot of pressure on yourself to memorize all of it, because quite frankly nobody in this world can... just be diligent and expect to spend more time on accounting homework than you would typically spend on other classes, because you have to just stick to it, solve the puzzle, and put in the time.

K, that's all I can say... upper division accounting is not a subject for, "I'm the brightest already, and can breeze the problems with my innate smarts without putting in the work" as it is for "I'm willing to put in the time, and admit I don't know anything until I put in the work, and even then it's only one problem, and it will change next problem."

i don't think accounting is difficult, it's just very boring to learn about.
FIFO.. LIFO.. i don't care -_-

forgiven, what are you studying? out of curiousity

It seems like you like to go to the chats about accounting and exclaim its boring attributes, and how "easy" it is... but you aren't studying it (if you are then I can't help but feel sorry for your hypocrisy), and for this, really don't have an informed opinion.

well, we don't get to pursue majors at ross.. but i'm mostly interested in entrepreneurship and management.

haha geeeez.. you don't need to flame me about that.

even though i'm not majoring in accounting, i've obviously taken accounting classes. i mean yeah, i had to put some time into learning the material and preparing for exams, but it's not as difficult as like human physiology or organic chemistry. that's all i said and i said it's very boring to learn about. seriously, there are people like you that love accounting, but there are tons of people who really don't enjoy it at all.

relax man. it's 4th of july weekend. i'm sorry if i keep insulting you, but you really shouldn't be taking it the way you are and have been.

Well, there are parts of accounting I understood and didn't understand when I first went through it--but part of that was because some of my undergrad professors were pretty bad--and if you ever tried studying accounting out of a book, you know this is a whole lot tougher than studying most classes out of books. Consolidations for example is simple if you get it explained by a good professor, but impossible if you get a stupid professor explaining it.

I also think that accounting is not intuitive--especially some of the tax rules. Congress just threw together rules from year to year to match their ridiculous ideas on how to stimulate the economy or give tax loopholes to corporations, etc. Tax is still like that--which is why corporate tax experts are few and well-paid. The tax laws for corporations basically make no sense--and never made a lot of sense--because there is the way to do it--and then there are the 200 exceptions that the tax accountant tries to find for his client.

Other than that, the basics of accounting are pretty simple--and can all be learned in about 10 to 20 hours. It's the weird stuff that causes the confusion--and is why lots of people get so frustrated when pursuing this as a major in college.

P.S. I'm a CPA in two states--and do external reporting and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance for one of the larger companies in the Silicon Valley. So if anyone has some specific questions, you are welcome to send me a personal message (don't expect a reply during office hours, though)--and no personal tax questions, okay?.

Calcruzer, is your career awfully boring? is it fulfilling or just something to earn a living with? just curious
