What makes Tufts Unique?

I'm applying to Tufts regular decision and after visiting a lot of liberal arts schools they all start to seem the same. What makes Tufts different from other liberal arts schools? What makes Tufts unique?

For starters, Tufts is technically a research university. But yes, it has a liberal arts feel (which I think is fantastic, by the way). I think that’s one of the most unique things about Tufts. Not many schools can offer both research opportunities and a tight-knit community and small classes. For example, I’m a freshman here, and three of my four classes have 15 students or less - one has only 9. The other class has about 40, and that’s because it’s required for psych majors so there are a lot of upperclassmen taking it. My professors are fantastic, there are virtually no TA’s teaching classes, and my fellow classmates are (for the most part) just as eager to learn as I am.

One great thing is the accessibility of professors. I’m currently a research assistant for a grad student here in the field I’d like to major in. I simply emailed a professor in my desired field (not even a professor I’ve had in class!) and they graciously set me up with one of their grad students. Even as a freshman, there are limitless opportunities available to you if you want them and take the time to look for them.

Another unique aspect of Tufts is the atmosphere. While many similar schools have a work hard/play hard mentality as well, I think the distinction lies in the student body. Everyone I’ve met here has been exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and laid-back, while still serious students. There’s no cutthroat competition like there is at other top schools, a factor I looked at when making my college decision.

Tufts’ focus on global issues, language, and international outreach and cooperation also sets it apart from other schools. While the language requirement is hefty for some (6 semesters, 8 for IR majors), it really shows the value Tufts places on world issues.

There are many things that make Tufts unique from other schools, some very noteworthy and some seemingly trivial (such as trick-turning). No one outside of Tufts has heard of trick-turning (google it), but it’s one of those fun things that make you love your school even more.

what stands out for me… Tufts wants people who want to make a difference in the in U.S. and the world…“leaders”.
