What might be the right low-reach, match, or safety colleges for me?

Hey all,

My junior year just started about a month ago and I am doing well so far. Since the end of last year, I have been trying to come up with high reach-reach schools that I would really like to attend. Here’s what I came up with for the high reach-reach schools: USMA, USAFA, Columbia, Brown, and USC. These are all really great institutions and it would be an honor to attend to any of them. But in case I don’t get accepted to any of these colleges, I need to come up with a list of match and safety schools. And I need your guys’ help! With that all said, the following is a little description of myself.

School: Public high school (not that competitive)
Location: CA
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 40-50k (a huge financial aid would be nice.)
Desired Major: Biology (or some other major that leads to becoming a doctor)

GPA: 4.0 uw/4.6w
Class Rank: 1 of 567
Class Schedule:
- FRESHMAN YEAR: H Biology, H Geometry/Trig, H English 9, Spanish 2, Geography/Health, Varsity Tennis (All A’s)
- SOPHOMORE YEAR: H Chemistry, H Algebra 2, H English 10, H World History, Spanish 3, Varsity Tennis (All A’s)
- JUNIOR YEAR: AP Physics B, H Trig/Pre-Calc, AP English Comp, Spanish 4, AP US History, AP Comp. Sci., Varsity Tennis
- SENIOR YEAR (projected): H Physiology, AP Calculus BC, AP English, AP Gov/Econ, (some visual art), Varsity Tennis

SAT I: none
ACT: just took the Sept 2015 one. not too sure how I did (hopefully 30+)
SAT II: none, not sure if I need to as I heard that ACT w/ writing takes place of SAT II’s
AP Exams: none so far, will take 4 this coming May

ECs (Here is where I don’t stand out at all):
- really close to becoming an Eagle Scout
- Debate Club (2nd year)
- Interact Club (1st year)
- Varsity Tennis (will be team captain either this year and/or next year)
- am searching for summer internships/programs (any suggestions, perhaps? haha)

Until more recently, I have been considering UCs but lately I have been hearing that instate tuitions for those schools are off the charts. So to summarize my wants: a good college that has an awesome biology major program (?) that can offer me most of the tuition or full ride. If my ACT score becomes a problem, I’m 100% willing to try harder to achieve an ACT score that will get me that full ride. So please, fellow CCers, help me come up with a rough list of match and safety schools.

P.S. I know that some may think that drafting a rough list of colleges at the beginning of your junior year may seem too early, I think otherwise. I just want to get an early start to lessen my anxiety when the time actually comes to actually start thinking about colleges. Hope I’m making sense, hahaha. Thanks again!

Run the Net Price Calculator on each school’s web site to see. If you are low income then Cal Grants will take care of the majority of the cost since you are in-state. Look at this for other options:

No one out here wil say it is too early!

Yes, use the net price calculator on UCs and CSUs to see what their financial aid will look like for your situation.

Pre-med can be done with any major, if you take the pre-med courses alongside (if not included in your major).
