This has truly been one tough rollarcoaster ride, for me. And I’m still hanging in there, just waiting for the replies from the colleges I applied to.
Bruce Springsteen & Stevie Nicks have really helped me throughout this process.
What about you?
I’ve listened regularly to my favorite bands while editing essays and sometimes writing them to keep the stress factor down. For me its Billy Talent, Limp Bizkit, Avenged Sevenfold, Buckcherry, and a few others. John Legend’s music also really calmed me down at points.
The Weepies has really helped me get through all of this, especially their song, “Can’t Go Back Now”. But on top of that, Dave Matthews has become my “good-music-to-listen-to-while-writing-essays.”
I keep playing this song called “Back to Oregon” by Broadway Calls. I got into the University of Oregon so I want to get myself really excited about it in case I don’t get into my other top choice.
While I wrote the essays and researched the schools I applied to I mostly listened to a lot of Florence and The Machine, The Funeral, Jack’s Mannequin, Matt Pond PA, Shiny Toy Guns, Ladytron, and Tegan and Sara. Ahh, they saved me from insanity.
Gotta say: “Bluebird” by Sara Bareilles was definitely my “deferred” song. AKA when I got my letter saying I was deferred, I drove around listening to it on repeat. It was soothing.
Hi there! Just wanna advertise for this song “Dream with my eyes open” by Alex Lambert (American Idol contestant few years back I rmb - he got great great voice but somehow was eliminated early).
Anw it is really really really inspiring and helped me a lot to persevere throughout the college admission process (esp to maintain my hope after having received like almost 10 rejections straight in a row and finally got an acceptance with huge FA^^)
Lyrics:
"Walking down the boulevard
And I see the stars so bright
I wonder if Ill ever get that far
Well maybe if I work real hard
Give it everything inside
Then maybe someday I can get it right
Will my name be engraved in this pavement
I cant wait til the day when
Chorus:
Finally I can shout out loud
Finally I can see the truth
Theres no doubt this is what I wanna do
Finally you can hear my voice
Finally Ill be on that stage
And that will be the day when
I dream with my eyes open, dream with my eyes wide open
Verse:
If I were to stop right now, Ill never get to touch the sky
Just give me one chance, just give me one more try
When I go to sleep at night I can see it in my mind
Then I wake up and it fades away
Will my name be engraved in the pavement
In the street next to all of the greatest
Chorus:
Finally I can shout out loud
Finally I can see the truth
Theres no doubt this is what I wanna do
Finally you can hear my voice
Finally Ill be on that stage
And that will be the day when
I dream with my eyes open, dream with my eyes wide open
Bridge:
Right now its make believe, but someday it could be real to me, real to me
If I dont break when its more than I can take
Will I make it, make it, make it
Chorus:
Finally I can shout out loud
Finally I can see the truth
Theres no doubt this is what I wanna do
Finally you can hear my voice
Finally Ill be on that stage
And that will be the day when
I dream with my eyes open, dream with my eyes wide open
Outro:
So I dont have to close them, cause I can dream, I can dream, I can dream
With my eyes wide open, with my eyes wide open"
Placebo - “21st Century Boy” (T-Rex cover), “Running Up That Hill” (Kate Bush cover), “Meds”
Billy Talent - Billy Talent I (entire album)
Shudder to Think - All their stuff from the “Velvet Goldmine” soundtrack.
Panic! At the Disco - “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out” (entire album)
Asteroids Galaxy Tour - “Hero” and “Lady Jesus”
Franz Ferdinand - Their discography. I mean, there’s nothing quite like Alex Kapranos to make you drag yourself through mounds of essays. He used to be a short order cook, so. Work ethic example and all, I guess.
Arctic Monkeys - “Favourite Worst Nightmare” (entire album) and “Humbug” (entire album)
Arcade Fire - “Neon Bible” (entire album)
@ratherimmortal…Placebo’s Running Up That Hill cover is practically my unofficial theme song for the college application process! Haha.
Other than that…tons of BOC -fave band-, Queen, The Clash, Eagles, Simon & Garfunkel, Miley Cyrus (random, thrown in there w/ all the classic rock, but I like her music), Motley Crüe. And occasionally some Green Day, Muse, and FOB.
And my essay-writing music was usually the soundtrack to The Social Network.
All my favorite bands. Disturbed kept me riled, Neil Young kept me motivated, the Beatles kept me cool, and Nirvana kept me alert. I listened to all my rock music, especially Classic rock, Punk Rock, prog-hard rock, modern hard rock, grunge, all the 80s and 90s metal, and alt metal. Lots of great music IMO.
I listened to Land of Confusion 80 times.
