What other options should we consider? [MN resident, 3.77 GPA, 35 ACT, <$33k, divorced parents; film / media studies, political science, environmental studies]

Macalester’s film major appears to be almost all theoretical analysis, so he took that one off the list. We did look at Kenyon (virtually), but he preferred Denison and Oberlin… but does Kenyon offer strong chances of merit? Maybe we could add it back, if so.

Kenyon does give merit and it’s generous with need-based aid even for families with decent income. For us, back in 2020, it ended up being almost $10K cheaper than Oberlin, even though my daughter (a Kenyon senior now) got a huge merit award from Oberlin. You can dm me for more information about Kenyon, if interested. My daughter has been more involved with their theater program than film, but it’s the same department. She’s not a major, though, but has taken some classes.

I was reading the College of William and Mary only reviews the custodial parent’s css profile and also has merit scholarships. Does anyone have any experience or opinions of that school and chances for affordability for middle class families and divorced families?

Thanks!

If you cannot afford W&M tuition OOS, I would not bother applying. The exception is if you are EXCEPTIONAL because they do have full rides that go to the best of the best. That’s the 1693.

They do not meet need OOS. UVA (and UNC) are the only two publics in the country that do.

They state they have merit scholarships to cover in state tuition but I’ve not read of anyone getting. Or you do like we did. - we applied knowing that because I wouldn’t pay full, there was a scimtilla of hope but if my daughter got in (she was WL and didn’t stay on), I wasn’t going to let her go anyway. So her expectations were kept very low based on our pre established budget.

Good luck.

Ok that’s good to know. I keep looking for this needle in a haystack option that’s affordable for middle class divorced families with a high achieving kiddo!

Hmmmm. There’s tons although affordability is in the eye of the beholder.

More regional but a similar tyoes layout would be Christopher Newport.

Larger but a similar campus feel to us was Miami Ohio.

Truman State is well thought of.

What type of school abd what stats ? What is the budget ? Desired major ?
