It got a lower rating because it's an all girl's school? Perhaps you could explain that . . . i don't know if us news a world takes that into account. Actually, wait, i do know. They don't. Proof? All of the co-ed schools behind single sex one's, mainly Wellesley.

Part of the ranking is the percentage of students accepted. (i.e. the lower the percentage of students accepted, the better the ranking) Coed schools have an advantage there because there's potentially twice the number of applicants. The whole thing is silly though...

Also, Admissions at women's colleges are largely self selecting. Much of the selecting out occurs before the requests for application are sent. So, the selectivity figures for women's colleges will always be lower.

Yeah, that's definitely true.
Just to get back to the thread, I have currently narrowed down my list to Wellesley and Rice University. Any thoughts?
I would really appreciate it. I can't believe I only have until May 1 to decide!

hey luckmango - Wellesley and Rice are two of my top 3 (3rd is Dartmouth).

Good thing we have all of, what, 4 days?, to make up our minds?

i'm deciding between swarthmore and amherst. GRRRR. could i have picked two more similar schools to split hairs over???

allureNY86, I don't think Swat and Amherst are all that similar in some key areas. I would pick Swat, hands down.

I can see strong attractions for each. I'd probably pick Amherst for me but the lower athletics profile at Swat is attractive, as is the lower binge-drinking problem as near as I can make out. The academics for each are high enough that I regard them as a push and would make my decision on non-academic factors.

i was debating between carleton and wellesley for my last two, and when i visited campus,

wellesley stole my heart :D

so, guess who's going to wellesley?!

casualresponder,

in which 'key areas' are Amherst and Swarthmore that different? And what would make you pick Swarthmore hands down?

I agree with TheDad in that the levels of athletics and drinking are different... I'm not sure how key that is. I'm not a drinker, but am kind of athletic.

location, location, location. ease of acess to city for Swat. the binge drinking at Amherst is a turn off. the warm sense of community and equality at Swat. Being co-ed from the beginning has impact on how women are a part of all decisions (as opposed to turning co-ed later on as after thought, as at Williams where I went and Amherst). I could go on and on, but this is a Wellesley thread. . . .

CR, I'm a fan of womens colleges, so point for Swat. But for location, I'd prefer Amherst if it were me. I've been a city person all my life and there's enough happening in NoHo and environs that I think it passes the test for many people. Actually, my comments about Swat & Amherst yield a preference for Smith, LOL. Funny thing, that.

I find that I agree with TheDad's logic more and more. (Even though this is the Wellesley board; I'm just a hijack-happy person.)

Where I live, it's relatively easy to get into New York City...but I don't think I would find the social life lacking at Amherst. Tom Parker is originally from the city too, and he says he doesn't miss it (then again, of course he'll be plugging Amherst).

I've heard that Swat's proximity to Philly is a little overrated because not enough students take advantage of it all that much... they stay pretty much on campus.

But Swarthmore isn't a college town, whereas Amherst is, and it has northampton to boot.

I also talked to someone who lives near that area, who used to live in Brooklyn, and says that transportation into Philly isn't as great as it is into NYC. Just another factor.

I easily got to the airport on public transportation from the Swat train station. My d. and her friends go into the city to celebrate birthdays by eating out frequently. She goes to Philly Museum of Art for art history papers or just to visit te Dali exhibit. She goes with 15 friends to Manhattan to stay for the week-end, etc. etc. There are definitely students who take advantage of the ease of access. I also like the cheap ($76) round trip airfare to get home for d. for vacations or for me to go to Parents Week-end. lol

You should decide on fit for you and if you end up at Amherst, so be it. My d. couldn't stand the idea of being so close to UMass (she calls it zooMass) because too many kids from her h.s. were there. That won't be an issue for you.

Good luck deciding and best wishes.

Hrm. I guess we all decided where to go next fall? Anyway, I was accepted to Northwestern, Cornell, Dartmouth, BU, NYU, Baylor, Wellesley, Rhodes, and Johns Hopkins. I decided to go to Johns Hopkins because it's one of the best schools for my intended majors. Good luck girls!

mit, stanford, yale, dartmouth, nyu, barnard, u of chicago, tufts
will be going to yale. wellesley gave me horrible financial aid compared to stanford mit and yale. goodbye wellesley! sniff sniff
