Since I have a SSN in the US, I have used a short version of my name.
This name has been used for filing tax returns in the US for years.

Overseas (India), where I relocated some years ago, and where presently
live, I chose to use a long (full) version of my name (first, middle and
last). The tax returns filed overseas uses my full name (that has one extra
name than my short name used in US).

My child is getting ready for college for Fall 2011, and we are in
the process of filling out CSS Profile etc.

What glitches, if any, should I expect in the college FA process due to the
difference in my names between my USA and India tax returns? How should
I handle these?

You need to make sure that the name on your SS card is the name that you are using on all of your financial aid forms and your taxes.

When you file the FAFSA, if your names do not match up, you will not be able to get a PIN and it could cause difficulties when it comes to processing.

Be sure to use one consistent name on as many documents as possible and put that name on the top of everything you send, with any alternative version of the name listed right below it. If the college assigns an identification number to the applicant, use that on all correspondence and submittals.

in addition, as the FAFSA is now moving toward smart logic, once you submit your name, ssn they will be able to pull your information and automatically populate the fafsa form. If your child financial aid app is selected for verification, the process would be much simpler if all of your information was consistent.

sybbie719, charlieschm: Thank you for your inputs. Both are good suggestions!
sybbie719: The name on the SS card (short name) is the one I intend using for Financial Aid forms and US tax returns.
