What prep boarding schools can a child asked to withdraw from Loomis Chaffee go

A 10th grader asked to withdraw from Loomis needs another boarding school to go to, what schools generally accept such transfers?

Did this student’s counselor or dean have any suggestions?

I understand they haven’t made any yet. Is that typically the only, or best way to go?

I would ask for their suggestions. They know the student’s strengths and weaknesses, and will have ideas about good options for the rest of the student’s secondary education. And if the reason for separation is one that will block enrollment anywhere in particular, it is important that you to know that so you do not waste your time by applying there.

Why the separation? Academic performance or behavioral issues?

Both actually

That’s going to be tricky depending on what kind of trouble the student got into and whether or not Loomis will be reporting it on the transcript and/or to other schools. If the behaviors are NOT being reported, then you can look at boarding schools that have more academic support, and you might consider having your student repeat a year. But this is late in the season…you’ll need a school that has an open bed for that gender in that grade (most likely opening would be for a domestic male boarder but you could get lucky for a female).

Consider a therapeutic school if there is a behavioral disorder.

I do not think that you need to worry about being late “in the season” as suggested by another poster if in need of a therapeutic boarding school.

@Publisher is correct that therapeutic schools enroll year round, but I didn’t get the sense that OP was asking for therapeutic… and that might not be appropriate or necessary, but without specifics about the academic and behavioral issues (and without a professional evaluation!) there’s no way for us to know.

OP indicated that the issues were both academic & behavioral related in post #5 above.

@Publisher there can be a big difference between a kid who is asked to leave for academic and behavioral issues and a kid who needs a therapeutic boarding school. If OP shares some information about what occurred - or what types of schools Loomis is recommending, we might have specific suggestions. I’m not disagreeing that therapeutic support MIGHT be in order, but it’s not a given.

I agree. See my post #7 above. = “if there is a behavioral disorder”. Just thought that that was clearly stated. Regardless, we are not in disagreement.

You can read through it or skip to lessons learned. Summary: we got nowhere until we hired a consultant, McMillan Education, at the suggestion of folks here. A few days later we had an interview at a school that told us a week prior they had no openings.

Schools have a business plan, with number of students, boarder/Day ratio, financial aid available. Even if “full” they will have a few extra seats. Very few: like 3-10. For a variety of reasons, some terrific schools do not fill to their business plans and have “Rolling admissions,” and will interview throughout the summer. McMillan knew who to call.

Additional observations:

  • It is very unlikely anyone at Loomis will know how to help, even if they want to.
  • That said, find some favorite teachers willing to provide references.
  • Find out what Loomis policy is towards inquiries from other schools. Most have a policy of saying nothing. But Admissions Officers or others may very well reach out informally to people there. The unofficial story may be a lot more positive about your child.
  • Most schools will consider kids who broke rules, unless it involves something like bullying, sexual assault, or stealing.
  • If you need appreciable financial aid, it’s going to be really tough to impossible.
  • If they haven’t repeated a year, consider doing so. Many kids at boarding school have done so. There is a LOT of upside, not much downside, other than expense.

Figure out what went wrong at LC, and make sure the new school does it better.
