Ahh…I thought my stress was over when I got into a prep high school, but of course, tis’ the season to start thinking about college, SAT, ACT, and just stress all over the place in general.?
My PSAT scores just came out on December 10, and although they were technically high (sorta?), I didn’t really feel like I was up to par with my classmates, some who scored 1390 and 1490. I am only a sophomore, but I think I would be better for me to start thinking about SAT prep school/classes over summer and hope that they will improve my PSAT scores as well bleed success into future standardized testing. I really really want to be a Merit Scholar, and in the amazing state of New Jersey (note the sarcasm) its almost impossible. So…
Will taking SAT prep classes help me to prepare for the PSAT? Or are there specific PSAT classes that I can take? Which ones are the “best” or produce the best scores (either for the PSAT or the SAT)? Are they worth it? (Important little note here: I know I’m not AT ALL disciplined enough to study on my own - this coming from someone who 100% winged the SSAT and took on the last testing date)
As mentioned above, I live in North Jersey, and can commute up to about a thirty minute drive. This year I got a 1290 (I’m a sophomore) and I am aiming for a perfect or at least near perfect score next year. I know its going to hard, but I’m willing to do almost anything (see note above), even if its not specifically an SAT prep course. Thank you to anyone who responds (if anyone responds) and I hope that you have a great holiday season!?
I would just take a SAT prep class and not bother with PSAT class. You will be well prepared for PSAT if you can survive the SAT prep class.
Try doing prep by yourself and raise your score to 1400+ first, or you will be wasting time at a prep class (they are v expensive).
I went to Elite Prep. Basically you just take a practice test every single week and go over all the answers. Then the teacher lectures on some specific topics.
At the end of the day though, you will be the only person that can raise your score. The academies won’t help unless you are self disciplined enough to take practice tests seriously, review outside of class, and talk to your teachers. This is the only way.
I would recommend a private tutor for you because that would be most time/cost efficient.
IMO, if you are looking for a high score, use a private SAT professional. It’s money well spent if it can save you tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars when you get the merit for college. To find a professional, ask the juniors/seniors or their parents who they used and interview several of them before you commit. The good ones are worth their weight in gold and will help you achieve your goal.
Why not try Kahn Academy? It’s free, it’s totally at your convenience since it’s online, and you’d upload your latest PSAT so it can tell you where to begin your prep. Along with the 8 SAT practice exams available and at least two practice PSAT/NMSQT’s, you have plenty of material for both the PSAT in the fall and the SAT. College Board also has an SAT app. that allows you to scan and score your test quickly. And if you are linked to your Kahn Academy account, it will upload there and adjust your prep accordingly.
