i’ll be attending my early decision college in fall this year. admittedly, i was not super on-top of applying to scholarships and i know i’ve missed a few deadlines. when applying to the school, i knew i wasn’t going to get much aid from the college because i don’t qualify for need-based aid under any circumstance, but i stupidly thought i would get at least a couple thousand from the school in merit aid due to my stats and ecs. the tuition per year is close to $70,000 and we would be able to pay, but i have three younger siblings who will enter college within the next four years as well, and it would be nice to get some money from somewhere. what are the best places for me to look for scholarships?? fastweb seems a bit sketchy
The best place to look is locally and most of them have deadlines this spring. At least here in our small town, there are scholarships from the Lion’s Club, Optimist’s Club, Education Association, rural electric cooperative, etc. like a couple dozen of them. It might be different in a city though. Our guidance counselor has info on most of those. DD is also looking at some regional or statewide specialized ones, like our church district, one for our state specifically for her major- ones that are specific enough to give better odds than random national scholarships. So look into any groups your family may be affiliated with or google scholarships for your area, state, or your major.
D’17 did win a national one specific to her major of Graphic Design, which helped narrow the field and they give more than one. We found that one on the Sallie Mae scholarship search.
In addition, your college may have endowed scholarships that students can apply for every year of college. I think a lot of kids don’t get those done, even though it may be one app for hundreds of scholarships.
Honestly, don’t get your hopes up. The vast vast majority of scholarships out there are need based, so you likely won’t qualify for them. My daughter got a book out of the library that was 3" thick and couldn’t find anything to apply for. She found 2 locally, but even one of those you had to provide financial information in order to submit it, so I think they also took that into consideration.
Can your parents pay for this $70,000 college…for 4 years for you?
@thumper1 they’ve saved a lot and my parents’ income is pretty large. They wouldn’t have let me apply early decision if we weren’t able to afford it.
