Hey CC Community!
I hope everyone is having a fantastic day.
I’m posting this forum thread to hear your thoughts about the Master’s programs in Mathematics Education at Teachers College of Columbia University and Harvard Extension School. I know that Teachers College is one of the most comprehensive schools of education in the United States, but I haven’t heard that much about Harvard Extension School.
Does anyone have a clear sense of what school provides the top-notch education required to become an outstanding teacher (or perform research in education)? Moreover, which school has a more prestigious education program?
Thanks so much in advance!
For teacher certification, the best plan is to start by determining what the state where you intend to begin your career will require. Often the programs that will get you a job are places that never get discussed in the grad school forum here. For that, “prestige” doesn’t matter much, if at all.
Check the school district where you would like to work. For a high-need subject like Mathematics, you might even be able to study for free.
You’re my favorite person right now. Thank you so much for not only replying courteously to my thread, but for lifting me up. I ended up choosing Teachers College, Columbia University and now I am trying to get in contact with my school’s Office of Financial Aid to find out options to cover my education. Tuition is ridiculously expensive at that school!
One of my best friends went to TC in a different field, and she was funded by the NYC Department of Education. In return she had to spend two years teaching in the district, which was fine for her because she’s from NYC and she wanted to do that anyway. So check out the DoE in New York to see if that’s an option!
