What school is good for a very bright child with ADHD?? Looking for Choate info.

We are currently looking at schools for my daughter who has moderate ADHD, but is otherwise an excellent student with very high scores. We are most interested in the medication policy at schools. Does anyone know what the policy is at Choate? Choate says that it is "supportive" of ADHD, but wondering how difficult it is for the kids to get their medication. Do they allow them to keep a small supply in their room like Andover and Groton? Or do they need to go to the health center? thanks!

I’m not sure about Choate, but Groton doesn’t allow students to keep stimulant medications in their rooms (I assume her ADHD med is a stimulant). They very clearly state that they will dispense those meds on a daily basis. This may be a change in policy, but is in the information given to us for my son’s new registration. They will allow some other meds to be held in the rooms with 7-10 day supplies. This wouldn’t really be much of an issue in a small school like Groton, but a major pain for folks in the large schools who would have to walk quite a ways each day for their meds.

As far as I know, Choate does not allow students to keep prescription medications in their rooms. All such medications are dispensed from the Pratt Health Center, which is conveniently located behind the dining hall. I would suggest calling the health center directly to get your questions answered, but here is the general information from the current student handbook:

Thanks Momto4kids - that is a new policy. My nephew graduated from Groton two years ago and they used to allow a 5 day supply in the room. But Groton is such a compact campus it probably won’t make a huge difference.

Exeter is supportive of learning differences

@2prepMom I never saw any form or page on their website that ever said they supported LD and ADHD, does it happen to be that I haven’t come across it?

^You may be interested in the Exonian, the school paper (with online version), which has had several feature articles on ADD-ADHD students at Exeter this year. It is common. Having my D there, I have been pretty impressed with the support I hear about for all types of learners.

I think what Choate means as supportive is that they have a committee which reviews Accomodation Requests and that is a condition for which accommodations are typically approved with the right documentation.
