<p>I have the basics such as notebooks, folders, pens, and pencils. </p>

<p>And on the first day of classes, should I even bring my books?</p>
<p>I normally don’t even have my books until the second week of class. By the end of the first week it should be evident whether you really need the books or not, so you’ll only buy the books you really need.</p>
<p>If you’re going for some stuff you should have the first day, I would suggest:
- pens of at least 3 different colours and some backups
- pencil
- eraser
- composition or spiral notebooks (whichever you prefer to use)
- folder to keep syllabi and handouts
- planner to mark down exam dates and major due dates ahead of time</p>
<p>I leave my laptop at home on the first day. The first day is usually an introduction anyway, not much note-taking or time-killing to do (though I don’t take notes on my laptop)</p>
<p>Highlighters
markers or crayons (you never know when your prof decides to give you an assignment to color a map (yes it did happen to me… 3 times in fact)).
note cards (get them now, waaaaay cheeper)</p>
