What schools did you choose UPenn over?

I still haven't heard from Yale (I'm not holding my breath), but it looks like it will be Penn over Hopkins, Georgetown, Tulane, and a few other instituions a tad lower on the totem-pole.

Cornell, and two Canadian schools: U of Toronto and McGill in Montreal.

Cornell gave me a sucky aid award (stupid Cornell! I loved you once!), so I think if I weren't at Penn I'd go to U of T. It let me into the best College and gave me $1000 for my first year (tuition's $5000 Cn. per year). Apparently, Trinity College people wear purple robes to meals and to special events, which I think is strangely cool. Plus, in Toronto I'd be near my family. Oh well. Penn rules!

"Haha kissing, agreed. I assume that the people picking Penn over Stanford are going to Wharton. At least I hope"

There's a reason why Penn is ranked above Stanford by US News you know, and its not prestige.

You were... Owned.

Up the tailpipe

Because the editor of USNWR is a Wharton grad?

Yep. Owned.

Anon, let me ask you a question. What is it that you personally like about HYPS so much that would make one crazy to choose Penn over any of those schools?

No its that I personally like Stanford that much. It's just such a dreamy place. I would go to Penn over MIT in a heartbeat.

To be honest I'd go to a lot of places over MIT lol

Damn straight.

I chose Penn over Georgetown, UPitt (scholarship), and Case-Western (scholarship).
It ultimately boiled down to Georgetown and Penn. But let's face it: I'm going into the sciences, and Georgetown's science program is nothing compared to Penn's, especially for pre-med.
I fell in love with Georgetown's atmosphere, but not its academics. If I were going into politics, Georgetown would be my haven. But ultimately, Penn turned out to be far more superior :-)

Any other CCers reject Gtown for Penn?

Yeah, I did

I would have, if i didn't get into Princeton.

I think academics aside, Stanford v. Penn is just a matter of personal preference. I enjoyed the urban/lively social atmosphere of Penn better than that of Stanford. While Stanford is more prestigious, I personally like Penn's location much better because of the easy access to other cities, jobs, and services on the northeastern seaboard. What is important though is that other schools are VERY popular amongst the students who go there. Stanford and Penn continuously perform better than the rest of the ivys in student satisfaction surveys, which part of the reason that US News ranked Penn 4th.

We can argue on and on about the US News rankings. There is a demonstrated east coast bias in the "prestige" factor and no doubt the editor had some bearing on Penn's ranking. Personally I don't feel that Penn offers enough academic flexibility to be ranked at #4.

I think it's just the size of the school that throws people off.

Right but there's always the Penn State issue.

No, everybody loves Penn. I love Penn too. It's just how they draw boundaries between Whartonites and everybody else that makes Penn not as tight a community as other schools.

Yeah I agree with that.

I agree that I was slightly surpised with penn being above stanford and mit. It should be top ten, but i dunno about 4. That's just me talking...not the waitlist letter. ahaha

hmm. when do rankings come out? usually end of august/early sept right?
