Is Penn in the east like Stanford in the West

I’m from California and Stanford here is a huge name here, comparable to Harvard, and Penn is not as big as Stanford is. A question for you guys in the East coast: Is Penn a more prestigious school than Stanford on the East coast, comparable, or less prestigious? Thanks

not that penn has beaucoup name rec. but stanford isn't terribly culturally relative

if you want the name don't come here. my teacher who wrote my rec still thinks its pennstate.

I live in Ohio, and most people I know either mistake Penn for Penn State or they just haven't heard of it. Everybody knows how good a school Stanford is.

Don't go to school for the damn name....

Anyway, those who NEED to know will know.

i don't know what you guys are talking about, UPenn is like really famous, everyone i know as heard of it. stanford is just as famous, but upenn is no less. upenn is an incredibly prestigious school, and pretty much everyone knows it. now if you say U of Chicago, then non one wlll kow what your talking about, but Penn is huge

lol not in cali. u say Penn n people say o u mean Penn State

The people you should be seeking to impress will know the name. If you're bus driver hasn't heard of the school, don't worry about it.

"Not in cali", i don't know who you talk to because I go to berkeley, (aka, in california) and everyone knows about Penn

oh, and I guess you don't say Penn, you hafta say UPenn, but in any case, it gets the message across

As a simple example on name recognition, everybody in the world know McDonalds, but few have heard of McKinsey. So is it more prestigious to work at McDonald's than McKinsey?

no but if Stanford is the Harvard of the West...then obviously Harvard is the Stanford of the East...

HYP have more name recog. than Penn (pennstate argument).

but Wharton....that name is more popular than tuck or kellogg or sloan

Most of my friends and acquaintances (even some teachers) at my school think that Penn is Penn State. Nevertheless, it doesn't distinguish my pride for having made it into Wharton because like others have already said, name recognition only matters to those who it actually matters to (like job recruiters and whatnot).

Yeah I agree on that, I was just curious. Since Penn isnt all that important among the "commoners" here, I was wondering if it was like that everywhere else. It's funny though cause Penn is in my opinion the greatest school out there, but not that many people know it here so it's weird when I'm all stoked that I was accepted but not much people even have heard of it. Whatever, I guess at some point in time were all gonna have to deal with the ignorant. Can't wait till next year at Penn

Wharton is much more recognized than just Penn. Most people think Penn, and they just add state. I am applying to both...drives everyone crazy. lol

MIT = Caltech = Stanford > HY > Penn > State schools > Princeton

I doubt most people who I know would know Wharton either...but maybe I'll try that out

Or on the other hand you can say go to .... Columbia University and EVERYONE (wall street and bus driver) alike will know exactly where you go ;)

Columbia is a country in South America where drugs come from. Truazn, I understand that people in the Columbia forum suck, but stop trying to create a Penn/Columbia rivalry. Penn>Columbia. No comparison.

sorry but penn's nothing without wharton...
