I turned down Vanderbilt; Nashville can’t hold a candle to New Orleans.

My son turned down Vanderbilt, UGA-Honors, UT-Knoxville Honors, and Rhodes College.

This years class is going to be amazing not only academically, but emotionally also. The fact that students are turning down schools like the ones above tells me that these kids have the audacity to not to give into the arbitrary ranking system and other societal influences. Class of 2015 will be a prideful and independent bunch! Can’t wait to be apart of it!

Yah! Completely agree Optomistic4ivy!
I heard more students than expected committed to Tulane this year, and many of us are turing down schools ranked way higher. So, I guess it’s pretty obvious that our class is gonna be amazing!

As are all the other classes.lol If you look through last year’s threads, you’ll find many of that incoming class turned down much higher ranked schools also. You will be in very good company!

There was a girl turned down Stanford 2 years ago!

Oh, there are numerous people that turn down top 10-15 schools. Stanford, Harvard, WUSTL, Duke, Chicago, etc. In fact for every school currently in the USNWR top 15 I feel confident there is at least one person in each class at Tulane that has chosen Tulane instead. To be fair, there are many more that chose to go to those schools that also got accepted to Tulane, as one would expect given the current realities (although we all know they have no idea what they are missing!). But it still is true that for reasons of fit, money, location, etc. people do make Tulane their choice even when presented with those other opportunities.

My D turned down Duke, NU, WUSTL, Cornell, +other 5.

Nice! similar to my schools! lol
Is she a coming freshman?

Yes. She is.

Uh-oh. Could be bad. I hope there are enough dorm rooms for everyone. Overflow housing or triple occupancy in dorm rooms can be detrimental to the college experience.

I’m really interested in seeing how the numbers pan out this year…

NervousParent, you are really holding true to your title.

Gahh, I wanna get into Tulane sooooo badly, when the time comes. I think the only school I’d take over Tulane would be Brown, and that’s it. And I do mean that’s all lol, I could (by a miracle of god) get into Harvard, and I’d turn it down for Tulane. I think Brown’s the only school that can hold a candle to Tulane. If by some miracle I ever get stuck with that choice, it’ll be a blissfull hell.

EliKresses - My daughter’s top school was Brown…at least on paper. Once we went to visit, it not only wasn’t her top school any longer, she didn’t even apply. Once she visited Tulane, which wasn’t anywhere on her list at all, she knew that it was were she wanted to be. I always find it interesting how two people love one school but have total different opinions others.

You are right in being nervous – doubles turned into triples are a reality at many colleges. It can happen.

Regarding students choosing Tulane over higher ranked, more prestigious schools, it would be valuable to know if that’s because there is a financial incentive (merit scholarship) involved. My bet is that there is.

Although I did receive the Deans Scholarship, it was not the determining factor. Tulane was my top choice, before I received any scholarship at all.

Cornell here. Ithaca did not seem a pleasant trip

My daughter turned down UMich, Ann Arbor and Case Western for Tulane.
