You're very correct in your first post - JHU and MIT are VERY different schools and atmospheres with kids interested in very different things. Whereas the competition is cut-throat at JHU (largely b/c they all want to go to medical school), there's nothing to encourage competition among the undergraduates at MIT. JHU is also... preppier? haughtier? while MIT students are more quirky and laid-back.

There's a lot of studying at both schools, but one being more soiltary, and the other being more collaborative.

As you can tell, I didn't get wonderful vibes when I visited JHU. Kids kept their heads down, minded their own business, looked and acted older than they actually are. There's definitely more of a community feel at MIT.

The cities: They're both urban campuses. But in very different locations. JHU is basically in the worst part of Baltimore possible. It's somewhat isolated from the tourist-attractions of the city and is plopped right in the middle of the slums. There's absolutely nothing but trash and graffiti for at least a mile around campus (the campus itself is rather picturesque). You wouldn't want to walk out at night. But they don't guarantee undergraduate housing, so looks like you just might have to walk out at night.

Cambridge has a lot of homeless people. One of them trailed us for a bit when we visited, it was a bit creepy, but nothing that I wouldn't (and don't NORMALLY) get in New Haven. I think in terms of location, Harvard is located in the more central shopping, eating, entertainment region of Cambridge - about the only thing I'd be jealous of Harvard for, while MIT is off a bit more, next to the river and the bridge, slightly dingier looking, a bit of a walk to the hustle and bustle.

I have to do calculus. If you have other questions just PM me and I'll try to help with whatever limited knowledge I do possess about these schools :)

you sounds like you've visited both places. can you tell me a little more about JHU's compus and atmospher? at first i heard it's cut-throat, then i heard more about "not that cut-throat".

once in a while, i do need total crazyness and a blast :P

ps.: only worry i have(or only downside i can think of MIT is), what if, althought i believe it's unlikely, MIT wont be able to offer biological engineering next year. that will be ugly for me :(

Go to the JHU thread, and read the thread titled "Why Hopkins" or something like that. Then come back and read the "Why MIT" thread here. Consider things like how many people mention grad school, prestige, and proximity, vs. how many people mention the student body. Consider what is being said. There's the difference.
