What sets Princeton apart from Harvard?

Oh Byerly ... I've commented repeatedly, along with others, in threads such as these that Princeton and Harvard are neither perfect nor horrible, but that they are in fact very different. That is a far cry from claiming Princeton is perfection. We generally just think it's better.

Gosh... from reading all the posts by loyal Tigers, Tigresses and their mommies and daddies over the years, I'd been led to believe there weren't any !!!

Imagine the conincidence: I got the same impression reading your posts about Harvard!

Touch

Given how much content he seems to have missed here, clearly Byerly did not take remedial reading comprehension while at Harvard.

Some of them are indeed pathetic, although many are informed and helpful.

You apparently missed all my posts commenting on the Summers/FAS dustup this year; when Mother Harvard deserves to have her knuckles rapped, I am first in line.

And I have never - EVER - criticized the academics at Princeton or any other college (with the possible exception of Reed) and have never - EVER - urged any applicant to apply to this school or that - including Harvard.

What I do, primarily is to supply INFORMATION ... almost always with supporting links ... to counter propaganda and unsupported claims. This page - for whatever reason - has more than its share of propaganda and unsupported claims, including an inordinate amount of "bashing" of other schools - primarily Harvard and Yale - intended, presumably, to make Princeton look better by comparison.

Some of the "advocates" here should take note of Margaret Thatcher's famous observation: "Greatness is like being a lady: if you have keep saying you are, you probably aren't."

Byerly, have you ever considered being the Presidential press secretary? You have the knack for describing your actions in terms that make them sound virtuous and high-minded while the rest of us see them quite differently.

aparent - lol.

Byerly's writings should be studied in a rhetoric class. Kind of reminds me of Simon Cowell on American Idol.

Perhaps you "see them differently" because you are not always pleased by what you see, which is not the same as finding them either innacurate or biassed.

(And, because she is so sensitive, I will not tell Alumother who HER posts remind me of ;) )

Aparent5 and Alumother, I'm obliged to agree. Byerly does seem to present him/herself in a way that smacks of self-proclaimed virtuousness; the pseudo-nobility that abounds in CC :(.

So, are Harvard and its peer institutions all that's on your mind, Byerly?

One would think so initially, but your little Freudian slip:

biasSed

begs the question - What else does Byerly think about other than Harvard? ;)

Either spelling is acceptable, Doolittle.

Then perhaps Harvard, the lady, wouldn't find it necessary to "inform" everyone and everything of her awesome femininity on the Princeton, Yale, and Stanford forums?

It's a simple request on my behalf.

Rather, what you are likely to see are references to independent sources of data, peer surveys, etc., that give the lie to whatever unseemly boasting and bashing is encountered on the "visitors" turf.

The reader is then left to ponder why, if college "X" is so wonderful and flawless, and Harvard is as bad as the college "X" people say, independent surveys and rankings (not Harvard bragging, or Harvard advocate bragging) - including those showing matriculation decisions made by top cross-admits with a choice - seem to indicate that ......

....gee, whiz! maybe these places are not as good, or Harvard is not as bad, as these people keep insisting!!

Sorry Byerly, you're actually right. I concede and I apologize for my 'ad hominem' tactics :( It's just that for some reason, you really just bug me. I'll try to look beyond it. I mean, back when I applied to Harvard, you were rather helpful in informing me about it. I just don't like how you seem to preach one thing yet whenever you talk about a non-Harvard school, you behave the same way you believe "Harvard bashers" do. It's a bit silly to see "Harvard bashing" in every single CC post. Come on! That goes beyond cynicism..... it's just plain, sad :(!

Of course I believe in equality of the sexes. However, I was raised to treat a lady right. So, if Harvard is a real lady as you imply, I won't "attack her." I may respect "her." But as you said, "if you have to keep saying you are, you probably aren't." ;)

did you count other names he uses ?

Ha! :D I have to admit, that's funny..... but, we really ought to be more respectful ;)

At least Byerly is older than most of us...then we gotta be as respectful as possible!!!

Well, that's if you BELIEVE that s/he's who or what s/he claims to be.

Since there's really no way to be absolutely certain on CC, and also since it would be absurd and na

I am 51 years old. It's all in good fun. Nobody can be faulted for loving their favorite school "to a fault". Including me.
