What should freshmen bring to Michigan?

I know there's some old threads regarding what we freshmen should bring to college, but i figure michigan is a lil diff from others..

besides the basic stuff, there's gotta be lots of things that come in handy but are not always available..

should we bring gloves? waterproof boots? ear muffs? long underwears(ha,i didn't know they even exist..)? bedsheets?

are there times when you guys can wear shorts and t shirts in dorms? or is it like freezing cold everywhere??

i just wanna know what to expect,be prepared, and not to bring a bunch of useless stuff when fall rolls around...

tell me your opinion!

thanks!

Gloves, boots are optional, I actually recommend a knit hat rather than ear muffs but it’s your choice, extra bed sheet do come in handy but the dorms are well heated (unless you are one of those people who are still cold when it is heated).
You can wear shorts and t-shirt in the dorms if you feel it is comfortable, it’s all based on personal senses. Some people think it is cold when other think it is warm. But the dorms are nicely heated.
If you want you can get an electric blanket, it is something I just like to have no matter what I’m doing, homework, computer surfing, or reading, you don’t have to use it for sleeping but I guess you can.

Besides clothing and accessories, do you think there’s anything else we freshmen should bring that would just be downright useful?

ummm
Bike (with lock of course), umm make sure you get a fan in case of hot nights , laundry basket (although that is pretty much obvious).

fridge
laptop
water bottle
anything that can help with storage since it’s limited.
a fan
extension cords
cleaning supplies
a tv if you have one (cable comes w/ the room)
shower shoes
alarm clock or ihome

besides the stuff listed above, i think it should be stressed that a good, thick jacket needs to be purchased. obviously in the fall it’s still pretty hot, but in reality it’s going to be cold 95% of your time there.

how important is it to have a fridge?

Depends on what food you keep in your dorm. If you don’t keep perishable food, then there is no use, if you do, like cheese, then yes it is important.

“…it’s going to be cold 95% of your time there.”

Oh, please. 95%? You probably won’t need a really warm jacket until after Thanksgiving.

“Oh, please. 95%? You probably won’t need a really warm jacket until after Thanksgiving.”

This spring you actually needed a lot of shorts and t-shirts, it was hot

thanks for the info guys…

by the way…
what exactly is in a dorm? will there be desks for laptops/hw? how about a bed? bedsheets?

thanks~

Microwave is pretty useful.

And the rooms typically have a desk per person, some type of closet/cabinet space and a bunk with a bed and no sheets.

Okay, i exaggerated a bit. I’m just trying to get the point across that a thin fleece jacket isn’t going to work. A lot of the people i’ve talked to who were out of state were completely unprepared for how cold michigan can get.

Anything that helps with storage is good advice. Some items DS found useful:

3M Command Hooks (the kind that pull of the wall easily)
Towel rack that hangs on bed
Power strip/surge protector
Plastic hangers
Shower caddy that stores all your bathroom essentials
Flip flops for going to/from shower
Fan (mentioned before, but essential)
Laptop lock

Good luck to you.
Message board to post on the outside of you dorm room door

Ziplock bags. Lots of them.

Duct tape is your friend

not if you lived in Minnesota, Maine, New Hampsire, and Vermont :D

ha, you definitely don’t need long underwear. my parents come from the tropics and moved to Toronto and then moved here, and it wasn’t too big a deal for them. just bring a warm jacket if you’re worried about the cold; gloves/mittens won’t hurt either.

I’m a junior in high school, but I live super close to U of M so I know what you need in terms of winter clothes. Basically, a really warm coat that can get wet, 10000 hoodies XD, warm socks, and clothes you can layer with ie. thin long sleeve shirts, t-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, light coat. That way you can take off stuff if you get warm. And on the other side of the spectrum make sure you have lots of shorts and t-shirts for warmer days because as cold as it gets here it can get really hot too. Basically, the best piece of advice for anyone moving to Michigan I can give is be prepared for days that are in the 80s and you need shorts and a tank and then the next day you have to wear jeans and a sweatshirt. Michigan is a very varied place and the weather changes every other day. By the way U of M is a beautiful campus and have fun here in Michigan. :)

I recommend everything you listed, especially the long underwear-- and I grew up in Michigan and am completely used to the weather and I still think it’s cold. There is usually at least one or two days in winter where the windchill brings the temp down to -20. In jeans? I DON’T THINK SO! Why shiver if you don’t have to? They make them that are just made of silk or a similar material, they make pants, shirts, and socks-- I never wear the shirts but will wear the socks often if there’s snow on the ground and the pants are great for the extra cold days or if you are planning to be outside for an extended period of time. If you wear baggy enough pants a pair of flannel pajamas underneath would suffice, I have friends that do that occasionally.

And do not be stupid enough to walk around in chuck taylors in the snow. For some reason I refused to wear waterproof shoes in high school (we had three buildings to walk between) and I got frostbite every single year. You must keep dry. Anything you allow to get wet on the way to class in the morning will be wet and cold for the rest of the day, and you CAN get frostbite out here in the winter.

Dorms are regularly REALLY warm. And when you get here it may very well be in the 80’s outside, in recent years we’ve gone without snow until as late as January so we can have a warm autumn every now and again. You will need a fair assortment of warm weather clothing, but the bulk of your clothes will be good, warm winter clothes.
