Son will be going to HMC this fall. What should he take with him besides the obvious? (sheets? fan? etc.) Thanks.

We saw lots of folks on skateboards and Razrs-- if S had gone to Mudd, he would have gotten a unicycle (another long-standing Mudd tradition).

My daughter goes to Scripps and she said she watched a basketball game at Mudd and they were on unicycles!

Our daughter is at Mudd. She found that she needed warmer clothes than she first thought and ended up buying some hoodies for the winter months. At first she insisted that she wouldn't need them in Southern California.

A fridge and microwave are nice to have too. We opted out of sharing the cost with a roommate (bought them ourselves) and were glad because her roommate moved to a different dorm at the end of the semester. It kept things simple.

Welcome to Mudd and make sure to join the parent group. Just follow the link from the parent section on the Mudd webpage. They have a lot of information, you can ask other parents questions, and search older threads as well. It was a great help when we were getting ready to first take our daughter and continues to provide helpful information.

S1, will be a soph next year, pretty much went with his 5yr old computer, shorts/t's/flipflops, running clothes, and hiking equipment. We/he bought other stuff as needed.

A Goodwill store is only about a mile away--between that and ebay he got outfitted for the cooler weather. He built his own longboard with parts from the web and acquired a bike/skateboard helmet after arrival.

Traveling light is always good, especially if your son is flying in (depending upon what part of CA you are from).

OH and definitely second the Mudd parents' group at Yahoo. You can ask just about anything and receive a good answer.

if coming from far:
laptop and external HDD (mobility and extra storage for mass media)
ethernet cord
sleeping bag (if you're like my freshman year roommate)
bath towel
clothes

^^ that's all you really need...

Thanks for the response folks! Son is all excited about college and can't wait to start!

There will be dorm auctions within the first couple of weeks. You can get fridges and random appliances at these for a pretty good price. A bit of extra shelving can be nice.

Something that is worth looking getting is an air filter. I have one of those silent shaper image ones and it was one of the best investments Ive ever made. Its quite easy to get allergic to what is in CA air.

There's an old thread that talked about this too. Might be worth checking out:

My personal opinion is that the water in Claremont is not very drinkable. I got a water filter about half way through freshman year. You're better off getting a pitcher than one that you put on a faucet.
