Do all you can and can afford to ensure your best possible SAT and/or ACT results

Make sure you’re pursuing a rigorous course of study this year and next with as much meat in science (chem esp.) and math (thru calc, if possible) as you can get and stand.

Seek and engage in genuine enrichment activities.

Pursue genuineness, excellence, and leadership in your ECs and work.

Develop your physical plant

Play on a team and work at being a stellar teammate

Learn to swim well

Consider attending NASS, and plan to submit your app on or about 01 Feb 2010.

Learn all you can about USNA and more so about career options and potential areas of interest in USN and USMC.

Begin to identify steps, timetable and checklist for the process of seeking an appointment. (Get organized for battle)

Read the paper, watch the news (preferably Fox) ;

Talk to your math and Eng teachers this year and discuss what you need to do to ensure their outstanding recommendation.

Do it/those.

Find out who your local BGO officer is.

Alert your Senators and Congressman of your intent to pursue their nomination and find out their time schedules and processes for doing so.

Watch the Military Channel this Sunday, Mon, Tues and/or 12 Aug to get a glimpse of 3 of 4 potential USN professional communities. (surface warfare, aviation, subs …no USMC)

Now, get these done and check back tomorrow.

I have a question. I have been hear and reading alot about the nomination, interview, medical exam, etc. What should I do first? What order do all these things go in?

the first step is to submit a peliminary application. If you meet the minimum standards, you will be issued a candidate number, which allows you to continue with the application process. Once you are issued the candidate number, you are an “official candidate” and information will be sent to you, including a date and location for your medical exam (usually completed during the summer just prior to senior year), as well as additional application information that must be completed (teacher references, official transcript, official SAT reports, class rank, activities, etc).

The nomination is a seperate part of the application process, and you should initiate that once you are deemed an “official candidate.” Typically, in the spring of Junior year, contact your MOC and let them know of your interest. Most MOCs have their applications on-line, which makes the process that much easier. When the time comes, take careful note of their application deadline and make sure you have your paperwork completed well before then (usually by Sept-Oct of senior year).

BGO interview: will be scheduled, usually after you have 50% of your application completed. Typically, this equates to an interview time from August-Nov of senior year (all depends on when your application reaches that 50% mark).

To sum up:
you need to complete a peliminary application (usually in spring of Junior year). This can be done in 2 ways:
1- you can complete the peliminary application on-line at usna.edu
2- you can apply for NASS (Naval Academy Summer Seminar) on Feb 1 of Junior year- an application to NASS automatically opens up that peliminary application.

That is all you can do until you get that official candidate number.

Thanks very much. The application process is really confusing, but now I get it.

That’s by design.

It’s an updated version of the Smallwood book, now edited by Ross. Well, well worth a read- it explains the admission process well!
