Currently I’m an undergraduate student at University of British Columbia in Vancouver which is a pretty good school (top 40 or so). I am currently in business and was looking to move to computer science and start my degree over again. I mistakenly took less credits this semester than permissible so I may be at risk of having to un-enroll(need to go speak to somebody). My grades in university are pretty poor but passing especially at the moment because I’ve been really lazy and negative towards my business studies (basically doing nothing), and I’ve committed to studying CPSC and some math in my spare time. I’ve been thinking that I want to go to California anyway because I have family that lives in Van Nuys. I am interested in going to Santa Monica College and studying 1 year there and transferring to a school like UCLA or similar quality. My father has a negative stigma towards community colleges, and would prefer for me to transfer to a 4 year like one of the CSUs(idk if thats possible - maybe because I’m transferring from a pretty good school I can get in?). There’s some CSUs near Van nuys perhaps that I can get into such as CSU northridge.
The question is basically, what is best move from my position and also whether going to SMC or a CSU with the purpose of transferring better? I have a feeling that moving basically laterally between 4 year institutions is often given less priority than a CC to 4 year, especially since its SMC #1 for transfers. Thanks.
Any UC will cost out-of-state students $55,000 a year. Your father should drop whatever bias he has against community colleges, because that seems like the most affordable option, and the best one considering your current grades. You can then look into transferring to a UC after two years, assuming you have a strong GPA at your CC.
Money isnt really an issue because my dads job pays for the majority of my education.also im a US resident.is it possible to transfer with good grades after 1 year? i dont really want to attend CC for a prolonged period if possible.
With few exceptions, colleges will prefer to see two years’ worth of grades in evaluating a transfer applicant. It’s possible to transfer after 1 year, but your options will be limited.
I have 18 credits from IB(philosophy from tok, psych and econ), i also have some possible credits from UBC do you know if this will count towards that 60 degree requirement?
You’d need to look at each school’s IB policy to know for sure. I don’t know about the UBC credits.
Does your father know how bad your grades are? What are your father’s views on paying college fees for a student who has been “really lazy and negative” and has a low C average?
Do you know that you can’t transfer to CalState until upper level, that you need to have taken specific classes, and that they preferentially take transfers from specific community colleges?
The other issue is they will see your grades from your current school and may factor those in when deciding on admission. Are your grades high enough to transfer to a 4 year school?
Why not switch to CS at your current school?
Some schools (no idea about CaliforniaUs) will accept many of the transfer credits and then you need to do credits in your major only.
Does your dad’s job pay for only 4 years or more? UCs are expensive out of state, since they will pay for that, will they also pay for you to attend a private college in California? There is no shortage of good ones.
