I am an international freshman applicant with 4.0 GPA, 2270 SAT1, 2400 SAT2 and 112 TOEFL but I was rejected by all the schools I applied except UCSD. I don't think my essays or extracurriculars went wrong because I had polished them for a long time and taken opinions from my teachers. Certainly I feel bad about this result. Now I'm considering retaking my senior year. Is it plausible? What should I do in this year? Or just accepting my fate and going to UCSD is a more sensible choice?

Well…what schools rejected you? It sounds like you applied to the WRONG list of schools.

Mom2, is Alabama still accepting and giving scholarships to international students?

Also, unless this is about financial aid prospects, it might be better answered elsewhere on this forum (Parent Forum if you want parent advice).

There is no reason to retake your senior year. What you could do is take a Gap Year, and re-work your college list. Even as an international applicant, your grades and exam scores would qualify you for guaranteed admissions and aid at some of the places mentioned in this thread and in the threads it links to: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships.html?highlight=bobwallace

If UCSD is affordable for your family, and offers the major you are interested in, it is OK to go there. Think about the reasons that you had for applying there in the first place. You must have liked it at least a little bit once!

Okay, high stat’s don’t necessarily guarantee you admission - not you, not anyone! You got into a great school . . . what’s your complaint???

Could you suggest something i can do in Gap Year to maximize my admission chances?

Answer the question about which schools gave you rejections. If you are holding out for HYPSM, those are lottery schools, especially for internationals, and your chances won’t be any better in a year. Why did you apply to UCSD if you don’t want to go there? UCSD is a very well respected university. Are finances an issue?

Andy, what schools are you seeking admission TO? If you are looking at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, and the like, you need to know that admissions for ALL students at these types of schools is in the single digits, with international students sometimes even lower. Getting accepted to these schools is not guaranteed for anyone (unless you donate millions to the school or are the offspring of a country leader).

What schools were you rejected at? To be honest, there may be NO WAY to guarantee admissions to these schools depending on which schools they are.

Folks here are very helpful, but this is the financial aid forum. Do you need financial aid because at some schools this DOES factor into admissions decisions.

Berkeley, North Carolina, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Rice etc. I know these schools are hard to get into but for Berkeley I just applied Cal Award which does not affect admission. I really want to go to Berkeley. That’s the problem.

Acceptances for Berkeley are VERY competitive…very. They are very competitive for U.S. citizens, and even moreso for out of state students.

UCSD is a great school, and San Diego is really a nice city.

Someone with more knowledge will have to pipe in here regarding UCB and acceptances in subsequent years to students who were denied admittance the first time around. That being said, I don’t believe another senior year in high school will benefit you in gaining admission to this school at all. You already DID your senior year in high school.

UCSD is a fine school. You’ll find academic peers there. Getting into UCSD is no slam dunk. You did well getting accepted there. Congratulations.
