What should I do to increase my chances on getting into a UC?

Im a sophomore in high school this year and I really want to go to a UC. Any UC is fine, I dont have many extracurricular's. Piano, guitar, drums, and I want to volunteer some place. Probably John Muir Hospital. My GPA is so-so, 3.7 ish. Next year im taking 2 AP's, AP Physics and AP US History.

I want to participate in more extracurricular activities, but I just dont know what. I have a tutor to help me study for SAT's, so if I do well on the SAT's, that'll basically be the only chance for me to get into a UC.

So please! I really need your guys' help/advice, what can I do to get into a UC? Thanks

coughs Wow, you are seriously misinformed. :) A 3.7 is more than enough for you to get into UC Riverside, for starters. With an SAT of 1800, along with your current GPA, you could get into UC Irvine and other UC's. You'd probably have a decent shot at UC San Diego as well. You can pretty much rule out UCLA and UC Berkeley, though. :(

Oh, there is more to getting into college than your SAT's. The essays are a HUGE portion of your admission. Your English teacher can help you with those when the time comes to write them... but don't fool yourself into believing that your GPA and SAT's are all that matters. You've also got the SATII... and seriously, a club would be nice. It doesn't have to be a whole bunch of clubs... just one that you have a real interest in, one that you can be passionate about, perhaps a topic for one of your three essays. It worked for me. :D Try Key Club, SADD, Best Buddies club... something along those lines, so you can get the community service, too.

If you are a California resident and apply to the UCs and are fully eligible, you are guarenteed a spot somewhere. Most likely UC Merced.

If you are in the top 4% of your class, you are guarenteed a spot at several schools, and given a boost at some of the other ones.

With the UC's, raw grades and Standardized tests are all-important. Try and get in a few important EC's (volunteering is an excellent way to go), as well as some leadership positions, if possible, but mostly focus on raising your grades and scores as much as possible. Good luck!

Going to a private high school and having only 400+ students makes clubs very very rare. I think there is 1 poetry club right now and a technology club almost got started, but yes... hardly any clubs around campus.

GPA, im going to have to keep up next year. The only reason my GPA is is 3.7-3.85 ish is because this year, my classes are very very easy :)

Whew, next year is going to be much more different. Do you guys have any study tips? I heard AP classes are really different..

start your own club then
my high school has less than 200 students and people still have created clubs

Gpa = 3.7 , Sat=2150
Ucla/ucb: Slight Reach
Ucsd: Match

Agreed. Just make your own club! :P And you'd be the President. :) That'd probably be good enough for clubs. You can fill in the rest of community service.

As far as study tips go for AP's... do your homework, and do it right. Don't be afraid to ask your teacher for tutoring after school or during lunch. Save everything from your class so you can look over it before a test. Go ahead and buy the AP Practice booklet about two months before the test. :)
