Hi, I'm a junior in High school and I'm really worried I won't be able to get into a UC with my grades and extras that I have right now. However, I do know people that have gotten into a UC (UC Davis) with a 2.8. I'm not sure if this is possible because I have only a 2.7 and a 1500 SAT score right now. The 2.7 is from my AP/Honors courses that happened to lower my GPA. I'm hoping my SAT score will rise once I retake it since it was my first time and my extra curricular (leadership, sports and club positions) will be able to boost my chance as well. I really want to go to UCLA or Davis to major in Graphic Design or Med. Science, but right now there seems such a slim chance. Is there any chance I could get in if I worked really hard for the up coming second semester? I'm taking the AP exams for US History, Biology and Art History in the spring as well.

Thank you in advance.

-Keep working on you GPA, go hard this year and show an upward trend
-Be sure to pass your AP Exams with a 3+, better if it’s a 4 or 5
-Take the SAT again and study hard for it, get it up as much as you can because a 1500 wont cut it

Youll probably get in at merced if your gpa goes upward trend and riverside. As for all the other schools your chances are close to zero like me according to everyone on here and you know what? They’re probably right. But I don’t care I’m applying Berkeley and all the other UCs who the heck has the right to decide your fate but them. Just be special that’s all I can say stand out however you can. Remember they’re humans and I think I would be tired of the same boring 4.5 2400 kids if I was an admissions officer also. Just do it. All the advice I can tell you. I got like straight c’s in NORMAL classes in tenth grade. Now? 4.5 with 4 AP classes… people can change just be sure to explain in your essay and show them how amazing you are. Hope I inspired you.

I agree with joseq941^. I got like a 2.9 soph year with all regular classes. Junior year, I got a 4.2 with 5 AP/H classes. I got a 1710 on the SAT and a 26 on the ACT. Pretty bad imo… but I tried my best to stand out w/ my ECs. I applied to Berk, LA, Davis and Irvine ONLY.
Some of my ECs: I founded and own a 5 figure business (increase profits from 2k to 4k/month, international, thousands of clients etcetc), business camp taught by Haas Berk professor, real estate internship, real estate marketing analyst position, Rotary Club business scholarship, martial arts 9 years (international and regional awards, junior instructor), piano 11 years, these are the mains. Minors include clubs, other sports, other other activities. Stuff that I don’t think are very important.

Def. raise your grades this year, and bump up that SAT/ACT. I’ll let you know how UC’s take my application.

How did your grades jump so high though during your junior year though?

Well basically… soph year was a slap across the face. I mean a 2.9? That’s crap… so then junior year I totally stepped it up.
Soph year: Adv English 2, Spanish 1, AP World History, Chemistry, Journalism 2, Acapella, Alg 2/Trig
Junior year: AP Stat, AP Bio, AP US History, Pre-Calc Honors, English 3 Honors, Spanish 2

I stepped it up a LOT… If I can pull it off, I’m positive you can too. Keep your head up bro.

Oh and TBH… I don’t know why people keep saying AP tests will raise your chances. I mean I guess it looks good to pass them? But I mean… they honestly don’t raise your chances. They look mostly at your ACT/SAT~GPA~ECs~Essays~OR… special conditions (health, low income etcetc if this applies)

Dang dude good job thatsgotta be a huhge accomplishment. Thanks for the advice! Helps alot.

Someone who got into a UC with a 2.8 probably had the bad grades in freshman year or in courses other than the UC/CSU a-g requirement list, where they are not counted in UC admissions GPA.

Here is the CSU admissions GPA calculator – UC is the same except that CSU will include senior year grades if available while UC does not:
