I’m a high school freshman, i am in a highly affluent district ranked fourth in our state among public schools. I have taken all the highest classes possible since things were offered in 6th grade, and i have gotten straight A’s. This is my first Trimester in the high school and i might end up with two B’s, in math and science, which i thought were my best subjects. These both are honors classes, and i’m wondering if i should switch in regular courses. This would cause me to get off these “paths” and not take the classes as an upperclassmen i was set on. Thoughts?
Do not switch unless you absolutely think you will be over your head in the upper level classes. Many colleges understand the switch to high school can be an adjustment and look for an upward trend. Believe me, it is not about getting straight A’s! Study hard for the PSAT and many doors will open based on NMSF/NMF. Keep taking challenging course work and working hard. Talk in one of your essays about the transition and how getting a B made you feel, what did you learn about yourself? Colleges and employers want people that can work through a disappointment - NOT someone that folds under pressure. You can do this and come out great.
I know you already have your sights set on Ivy/Ivylike schools and that is OK. I know a student at Brown that had 3 B’s on his transcript at app time. He told a compelling story and he was an interesting student. There are literally thousands of Valedictorians applying to these schools and many get turned down. Make yourself more interesting.
You shouldn’t be so fast to react to the b’s. First off like the above poster said, High school is much different than middle school, and the transition can hit some people harder than others. It seems like you care about your grades very much, so with time you’ll develop the right study habits which will make it easier to get A’s. If you continue to get B’s the rest of the year then you might want to re-think your classes, but for now I would stick with it. Freshmen year is looked at the least of the 4 years of high school, so don’t sweat it too much. Try your hardest and if you are totally unsatisfied by the end of the year, make some changes when it comes to sophomore year classes.
Also, GPA is only one of many factors considered for college admission. If you feel yours is going to end up being low, focus on other things like achieving great ECS and studying for standardized tests.
