What should I do?

I am a Sophomore right now and Ive heard that I would have a better chance majoring something OTHER than Biology but I am torn between Majoring for Biology/Minor in English or Double Major for Biology AND English or majoring in English and just still taking the Biology classes I have to take but taking the English classes I have to take as well. Which one would better my chances at getting a good med school? Would it help at all? I am just concerned.

I think any outcome that would involve you taking an English class will increase your chances of getting into a med school because the admissions committee just might be able to understand your writing.

Word, quirky… commas are a good thing… I thought they taught that in college English these days.

Just kidding, please don’t take offense. But really, it’s good to have a major that makes you stand out from all the bio majors that apply to med school.

My brother went to a pretty good state school, majored in bio, and got into 2 -3 good medical schools.

What made him stand out was all the volunteer hours he put in.

If you’re good at bio, concentrate on it, make it your biggest concern and get the best gpa you can. Stand out in other ways (start volunteering early and often, especially during summers, have a job, do internships, etc).

I would rather have a 3.8 gpa in bio than a 3.5 in english w/ bio classes or some other variance.

But thats just my opinion, I don’t plan on going to med school.

If Biology is what you like best and what you are good at, then major in it. I think a Bio major and an English minor would be rather unique for a med school student. That would show that you are interested and knowledgeable in life sciences as well as having the ability to think critically and analyze.
