What should I major in?

I'm currently an incoming sophomore at Pace University and I'm changing my major. I realized I no longer want to be a speech pathologist. I would like to do Social Work instead, the problem is my school doesn't have my major, and I don't want to transfer because I love it here! What should I major in instead? I was thinking about double majoring in psychology and sociology and then going to graduate school for social work. Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks!

Look at the prerequisites grad schools in social work expect. Make sure those courses are part of your education before you apply to grad school. Talk to an admissions counselor at a grad school in social work, too.

Women and Gender Studies
Psychology
Sociology/Anthropology
Personality/Social Psychology
are all offered at Pace.

To be a licensed Social Worker, you need a Masters in Social Work.

Like the other poster said, look for pre-requisites needed for a Masters in Social Work but mostly it seems that a liberal arts degree is needed. I saw some that require statistics and Human Biology.

Perhaps you could think about what type of social work you would like to do…Work with kids? Then make sure to take child psychology and human development courses. Work with addicts? Then take psychology/biology courses related to that. Work with immigrants? Then take some classes in the second language most prevalent in your desired area. Work with older people? You get the point.

Also, what attracted you to speech pathology?
What didn’t you like about it?

Also are you interested in Social Work or Counseling? Pace has a number of programs:

List of Accelerated Dual-Degree Combined Pace Undergraduate/Pace Graduate Programs

The following accelerated dual-degree Pace University programs offer Dyson College undergraduates with superior academic abilities an opportunity to earn a BA or BS degree and a graduate degree in a shortened period of time than by pursuing them separately.
Note: There are separate admissions requirements for the graduate portion of the program, and admission to the undergraduate part of the program does not guarantee admission to the graduate part. Both degrees are awarded at completion of the graduate program requirements.

I saw the dual degrees Pace offers and thought those might be helpful, but most of the degrees are offered on the Westchester campus and I’m attending the NYC campus. I think I might pursue the psychology major, maybe double majoring it with Sociology. I’m going to speak with one of my advisors to get their opinion.
