I’m so confused on what to major in! I love sciences (psychology, chemistry, medicine, anthropology, research). I love art; anything from illustration to art history. But I hate working directly with people, and advanced math is not my forte in the slightest.
I’ve oscillated between so many majors its not even funny. Psychology, business, cullinary arts, surgery, animation, graphic design, nuclear engineering, pathology.
I know there’s some paths that have no appeal to me: sales, management, nursing, therapy, accounting, law, counseling, language, teaching, computer science, music, performing arts, sports.
I already tried going to college for a semester without direction just for basics and I failed miserably (1.62 GPA). I would really like to go back but I know I need to have a goal in mind to get through the boring stuff.
Two things you can do to help you select a major:
-
Think about a general career field/area that you might like to enter. So for example, you might decide that you want to go into tech development - not exactly what, but just tech - and that might direct your choice a bit.
-
Take a class or two in a few areas in which you are interested. See which one you like the most and wouldn’t mind spending 2-3 years studying.
MOst people have many varied interests; the major will only represent one of them. You just have to pick something you like enough to study somewhat intensively for a few years, but it doesn’t have to direct your entire career.
Thanks! The biggest problem for me is trying to decide which field to go into. I know it’s a lot easier to switch majors when it’s in the same general field but I can’t figure out if I’m more drawn to medicine or fine arts or physical sciences or economics. I definitely will try taking a few classes in those different areas this coming semester!
