Econ 100A
ESPM 144
or
UGBA 131

EDIT: Never mind. I should have looked at the Unit count. Econ 100A is 4, ESPM 144 and UGBA 131 are both 3. So I should be able to Phase 1 all 3.

I have yet to decide what my 4th class will be.

About UGBA. What is more practical to the real world in terms of finding jobs, finance or accounting? I'm an economics major but I'm also going to take classes at Haas in one of the two areas. I would take classes in both but I don't have enough room.

I personally find finance a lot more interesting than accounting and would want a job in that area. But is it true that you need an exceptionally high GPA to land a finance job? Compared with accounting which just needs a 3.0+?

Because if a high GPA is required for finance jobs then I think I'd be out of the fray and I shouldn't waste my time with it...

How fast would ESPM 144 fill up by the way? Same goes for UGBA 131 because I'm not a Haas major. I really want both of these classes. Would it be plausible to Phase 2 Econ 100a? I noticed the Econ 100 series doesn't really fill up during Phase 1 and I particularly dislike the times that are most sought after for economics discussions (I enjoy late afternoon or early morning for discussions instead of around noon).

Thanks, my brethren.

Define finance? What part of finance do you find interesting? If you want to do AM, I think 3.5+ is fine. If you want to do IB, 3.7+ and previous finance internship experience is required. If you want to do corp fin @ a top firm, I think 3.3+ is fine. Unless you’re doing a quant major like math or stats, I think you need around a 3.5+ to be competitive. (If you have exceptional work experience, then a 3.3).

Also, pre-req for 131 is 103, have you taken that one yet? Also, 131 is usually full and filled by haas kids by adjustment phase, so you should have a backup. Very few non-majors ever get into that class, even some majors don’t get in…

When I took Econ 100a, I phased 2’ed it and was fine. There’s a lot of seats and tons of people like to drop that class.

I’m taking 103 this semester.

And I’m mainly looking into corporate finance.

103 doesn’t really relate to corp fin… for corp fin, I think accounting etc would be more useful.

Good luck! I don’t know too much about corp fin, but I think 3.0+ is pretty good if you have solid extracirriculars. Go to info sessions and stuff, check things out :)

What do you mean 103 doesn’t relate to corporate finance? Isn’t 103 the intro finance class which is needed for 131? I like doing those types of problems, compounding, discounting, annuities, portfolio evaluation, etc.

I do go to lots info sessions and network with recruiters so hopefully that will help me later down the line.

My EC’s however… I’m in a club. That’s about it, lol. Unless you include internship positions. I’m going to join the Undergraduate Finance Association next semester though.

Regarding ESPM 144, if anyone has taken it, is it essential to have taken bio 1a or bio 1b before taking the course or is high school AP biology good enough? Or do we even need to know biology?

Ahh, I see. I just thought most undergrad positions in corp fin are more accounting/inventory/merchandising based. I had assumed they require an MBA or work experience in IBD to work in actual M&A/valuation positions. If you like that stuff, what don’t you try IBD instead? (also… UGBA131 is basically intro to investment banking…3/4 of the people in that class want to do IB…)

I’ve interviewed with a couple of finance divisions in companies before, usually, it’s not M&A/Valuations based, but rather some of the stuff below, like accounting/internal audit etc. Finance positions in companies:
[Apple - Jobs at Apple - Corporate (us)](<a href=“Corporate Functions - Careers at Apple”>Corporate Functions - Careers at Apple)

But good luck!

I wish I could do IBD but my GPA is far too low.

but anyways. Thanks for the information. I’ll stop asking questions.

I’ll probably take 102A as my 4th class then.

Edit: just looked at the Econ undergraduate website and UGBA 133 also counts as an elective. It’s titled Investments. I’ll just not take a UGBA 131 this semester and do UGBA 133 next semester.
