S is going to the adm. interview. It's a large competitive day school in very large southern metro city. I know instructions say suit and tie not necessary, but does that mean wear what he normally wears(Abercrombie, Polo, etc.) to school so they see him as he is or should he take it up a notch? I don't want us to look like idiots by over-dressing or under-dressing. thanks

don't dress casual, like a t shirt and jeans. whatever you do, don't wear a tie. It just reads: I'm trying to impress you by dressing fancy. They want to see who you really are, but a straight cut, clean who you are. I would say some nice khakis and a shirt without tie. No sneakers either, nice leather shoes. Oh, and always wear a watch, it makes it seem like you care how your time is being spent. Oh, but don't look at it once while your visiting, that just says: "I don't want to be here, I want this to be over, I'm too good for your school" Follow these and you'll be fine

There have been a number of threads about what to wear to interviews (you could try searching "what to wear" or "interview apparel" or something). The general consensus is that you should have your boy wear something that would put him on the "nicer" end of whatever the school's dress code requires. Then he won't feel weirdly over- or under-dressed.

Given that they have said that coat and tie aren't necessary, you can surely go with a nice polo or button-down oxford and khakis (nothing too baggy or with too many cargo-type pockets). Leather shoes, instead of sneakers, will also dress it up a bit without seeming too dressy.
